Job description

Access Control & Security Technician

Department: Projects

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Louisiana

Reporting To: Kyle Vernotzy

Compensation: $20.00 - $35.00 / hour

Description

The Access Control & Security Camera Technician is responsible for installing commercial access control, video surveillance, and related low-voltage security systems as part of the AC&S Projects Team.

This is primarily a project-installation role. The technician will run and terminate cabling, mount and wire devices, connect panels and power supplies, assist with system configuration, test completed work, and document the final installation.

The successful candidate must be dependable, safety-conscious, detail-oriented, and committed to professional workmanship. Installation is not considered complete until the work has been tested, deficiencies have been addressed or clearly documented, and the Project Manager or field lead has received an accurate status update.

The technician works closely with Project Managers, field leads, engineers, programmers, subcontractors, vendors, clients, and other trades to complete projects safely, efficiently, and in accordance with the approved scope of work.

A successful person in this role:

  • Completes assigned installation work safely, accurately, and according to project drawings, manufacturer requirements, and company standards.
  • Produces clean, professional workmanship, including properly supported and labeled cable, orderly panel wiring, secure device mounting, and neat finished installations.
  • Tests and validates installed systems rather than assuming the work is complete once equipment is mounted or wired.
  • Identifies missing materials, site-readiness issues, scope conflicts, and technical risks early enough for the project team to respond.
  • Maintains ownership of assigned work through installation, testing, documentation, correction of deficiencies, and final completion.
  • Communicates progress, remaining work, blockers, and support needs clearly and promptly.
Key Responsibilities
  • Install commercial access control, video surveillance, and related low-voltage security systems.
  • Review project scope, drawings, device schedules, work notes, and material requirements before beginning assigned work.
  • Run, support, terminate, test, and label Cat5e/6, low-voltage, and fiber-optic cabling as required by the project.
  • Install security cameras, access control readers, door contacts, request-to-exit devices, electronic locks, power supplies, relays, panels, and related hardware.
  • Wire and terminate access control and security panels while maintaining proper voltage, polarity, grounding, labeling, and signal integrity.
  • Install racks, cabinets, backboards, pathways, patch panels, enclosures, and other supporting infrastructure within the assigned scope.
  • Assist with device addressing, basic programming, system configuration, and coordination with onsite or remote programming resources.
  • Maintain an orderly work area, protect client property and finished surfaces, and remove installation debris at the end of the workday.
  • Test cameras, readers, locks, door functions, inputs, outputs, power supplies, cabling, and network communication to confirm proper operation.
  • Aim and adjust cameras to achieve the required field of view and verify recording and connectivity when applicable.
  • Troubleshoot installation issues and coordinate resolution with project leadership, engineering, vendors, or other trades when needed.
  • Correct deficiencies within the technician’s responsibility and clearly document items requiring another resource, vendor, or trade.
  • Record cable labels, device information, panel terminations, testing results, field changes, photographs, and outstanding items.
  • Provide complete and accurate handoffs so remaining work and next steps are clear to the Project Manager and project team.
  • Coordinate daily priorities and sequencing with the Project Manager, field lead, or designated project contact.
  • Communicate material shortages, access limitations, site conditions, scope concerns, and schedule risks before they create avoidable delays.
  • Work professionally with clients, general contractors, electricians, door and hardware vendors, network teams, subcontractors, and other trades.
  • Follow company safety procedures, job-site requirements, applicable codes, and manufacturer installation standards.
  • Use company vehicles, tools, lifts, ladders, test equipment, materials, and client property responsibly.
  • Maintain accurate time entries, project notes, material records, and expense documentation.
  • Manage multiple assigned tasks and project priorities while keeping work status and documentation current.
  • Meet project deadlines and communicate potential delays before they affect client or project commitments.
  • Work independently while knowing when to involve a field lead, Project Manager, engineer, programmer, or leadership.
  • Ask questions when drawings, scope, field conditions, or technical requirements are unclear rather than proceeding based on assumptions.
  • Protect confidential client information, credentials, drawings, security-system details, and company information.
  • Be willing to adjust work hours, travel, or project assignments when required to meet project and client needs.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, including tools, ladders, cable, equipment, and project materials.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, climb ladders, work from lifts, and perform physically demanding installation tasks.
  • Ability to work above ceilings, in equipment rooms, telecommunications spaces, construction areas, and other commercial environments.
  • Regular travel to client job sites is required; occasional out-of-town or overnight travel may be necessary.
  • Evening or weekend work may occasionally be required for project deadlines, cutovers, or client needs.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two or more years of hands-on experience in access control, video surveillance, security-system installation, or low-voltage cabling.
  • Experience running, terminating, testing, and labeling low-voltage cabling.
  • Experience installing and wiring cameras, access control devices, electronic locks, panels, relays, and power supplies.
  • Ability to read and interpret floor plans, wiring diagrams, riser diagrams, point schedules, and manufacturer documentation.
  • Working knowledge of low-voltage electrical principles and basic IP networking, including IP addressing and Power over Ethernet.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce clean workmanship and accurate project documentation.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to safely operate a company-issued vehicle.
  • Commercial or enterprise access control and video surveillance project experience.
  • Experience with Hanwha, Avigilon, Evolv, or comparable security platforms.
  • Experience with fiber-optic cabling, structured cabling, racks, pathways, and related infrastructure.
  • Alarm technician, security-system, fire-alarm, or other applicable licensing or registration.
  • OSHA 10, OSHA 30, lift, fall-protection, or related construction-site safety training.
  • Manufacturer certifications involving access control, video surveillance, or security screening technologies.

Compensation will be based on the candidate’s relevant experience, technical knowledge, demonstrated capabilities, certifications, and overall fit for the position.

Candidates may be hired at one of the following levels based on their qualifications and ability to independently perform the responsibilities of the role:

  • Technician I
  • Technician II
  • Technician III

The assigned level will reflect the candidate’s current experience and capabilities, including installation proficiency, troubleshooting ability, platform knowledge, documentation practices, leadership experience, and ability to complete project work independently.

In-Telecom provides opportunities for technicians to advance to higher levels as they develop additional technical skills, earn certifications, demonstrate consistent performance, and take on greater project responsibility.
