Safe Passages’ After School Program provides quality enrichment support services to children and youth through a strong youth development framework. Safe Passages is a provider in the delivery of school-based After School Programs within OUSD schools, including at the high school level, where instructors play a critical role in keeping older youth engaged, motivated, and on track toward graduation and beyond.

Role Summary

The Academic Enrichment Instructor will be part of an after‐school team dedicated to providing high quality programming to high school‑aged youth and their families. The Academic Enrichment Instructor will facilitate age‑appropriate activities that will help them build skills, explore interests, and stay connected to a positive school‑based community during out‑of‑school time. Sessions will be delivered in person. The Academic Enrichment Instructor will be supervised by Safe Passages Expanded Learning Program Site Coordinator and the After School Program Specialists.

  • Sports & Athletics Enrichment: Soccer, football, basketball, and other movement‑based activities. Instructors will lead structured sports programming, skill‑building drills, and teamwork‑based activities that promote confidence, inclusion, and leadership among high school students
  • S.T.E.A.M. Enrichment: Facilitate hands‑on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and/or Math activities and projects that build critical thinking, encourage curiosity, and promote real‑world problem‑solving skills relevant to students' academic, career, and personal interests
  • Academic Support: Provide academic support to students, including homework help, monitoring progress towards graduation requirements, and guidance on college and post‑graduate planning
Responsibilities
  • Ensure programsafety by implementing and enforcingall School Site, and Safe Passagespolicies.
  • Develop and instruct enrichment activities for high school youth within social emotional learning, S.T.E.A.M, health and fitness/sports, youth leadership, and social justice. Emphasis on content that reflects the interests and developmental needs of teenagers.
  • Instructors assigned to Sports enrichment will plan and lead athletic activities that are inclusive of student abilities, build physical literacy and promote sportsmanship.
  • Instructors assigned to S.T.E.A.M. enrichment will plan and lead hands‑on projects and activities that build technical and creative problem‑solving skills.
  • Complete weekly lesson plans to be submitted via Google Classroom.
  • Prepare students for performances or presentations at showcases and family events.
  • Provide youth development best practices, monitor student progress and collect surveys as appropriate.
  • Participate in weekly collaborative staff meetings and trainings, plus agency‑wide professional developments quarterly.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience instructing and facilitating activities for children and youth (volunteer/paid), ideally with high school‑aged students, in an urban K‑12 environment.
  • Ability to work with teenagers, families, and staff from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities.
  • For Sports enrichment roles: experience coaching, playing, or instructing organized sports/movement strongly preferred.
  • For S.T.E.A.M. enrichment roles: experience in a S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. field, education, or related hands‑on instruction strongly preferred.
  • Classroom and group management skills specific to adolescent/teen populations.
  • Ability to develop and implement weekly lesson plans.
  • Strong Communication skills; Bilingual applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Experience using Microsoft Offices and Google Suites.
  • Must be dedicated and able to commit to the entire school year. No exceptions.
  • Must have a High School Diploma.
  • At least 48 semester units from an accredited college or passing grade on Instructional Aide exam.
  • Clearance of TB test and background (fingerprint) check.
Employment Classification

This is a part‑time hourly position. Part‑time employees may opt‑in to access tele‑health services for medical, mental health, dermatology, nutrition, and other select services.

Work Schedule

14-23 hours per week, M-F; based on OUSD academic calendar (holidays and teacher professional developments). Must be available all days of the week.

Candidates must be available for 2026-2027 school year.

Compensation

$23 - $27 per hour/paid weekly depending on education, experience and references.
