ACADEMIC DIRECTOR AND CLINICAL ASSISTANT/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF PUBLISHING

The NYU School of Professional Studies seeks an Academic Director and Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor of Publishing in the Center for Publishing, Writing, and Media, effective Fall 2025. (The rank of the faculty position will be determined based on the candidate's experience and qualifications.)

Reporting to the Associate Dean of The Center for Publishing, Writing, and Media (PWM), the Academic Director oversees the graduate degree in Publishing, the NYU Summer Publishing Institute, and will support the NYU Advanced Publishing Institute and custom publishing programs. The Academic Director will lead the faculty and draw support from the field to advance the program's academic mission. They will also work closely with the Academic Directors within the division to implement the Center’s goals and vision and increase the program profile and visibility.

In this role, the director is responsible for, but not limited to, the following expectations-

  • Leading and guiding adjunct faculty to achieve the program's academic goals and objectives successfully.
  • Building and sustaining relationships with professionals and program graduates to grow program reputation and student opportunity
  • Designing and updating curricula to maintain course and program relevance and quality.
  • Having proficiency in teaching and learning; experience working with professional studies programs is desired.
  • Recruiting and mentoring adjunct faculty to encourage effective teaching and research.
  • Conducting information sessions and other recruitment events.
  • Working closely with other divisions including Strategic Marketing and Admissions to ensure student success.

In addition to the administration responsibilities, the Academic Director will also teach within Publishing. This is a nine-month faculty appointment with a two-year renewable contract; the Academic Director role is a concurrent twelve-month administrative appointment. The preferred focus is in the real-world application in areas such as working experience in book publishing and digital media, plus academic experience and the ability to teach courses in book publishing and digital media. This position includes teaching, creative production, and service expectations with the responsibility to take an active role in curriculum development and delivery, building industry partnerships, advising students, and support in the development of offerings related to publishing.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $85,000 - $135,000. The range for the annual administrative stipend is $10,000, - $30,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

About the Center for Publishing, and Media
The Center for Publishing, Writing, and Media offers three graduate degrees: the MS in Publishing, the MS in Professional Writing, and the MS in Translation and Interpreting, as well as continuing education and certificate courses in a wide range of topics in the humanities, publishing, and storytelling, among other areas.

The Center is at the forefront of publishing education, recognized globally for its innovative, practice-based curriculum, faculty of industry leaders, deep industry outreach, and experiential learning via internships, events, and international student opportunities. Offering multiple pathways to publishing, the Center provides students with the opportunity to enroll in a 36-credit graduate degree, the MS in Publishing, or a four-week summer intensive, the Summer Publishing Institute. In addition, the Center offers a custom publishing course in book publishing, the NYU Advanced Publishing Institute; plus two annual programs for publishers at the Sharjah International Book Fair. Its online MS degrees in Professional Writing and Translation and Interpreting are industry leaders and standard bearers.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will (i) hold an advanced degree, preferably in publishing, writing, communications, humanities, or similar; (ii) have significant publishing industry working experience; (iii) have at least three years of academic experience and effectiveness in higher education or comparable experience, (iv) have experience working with or teaching diverse student populations. Candidates should be comfortable teaching in-person and online, demonstrate an ability or potential ability to engage in meaningful service or administrative work. Strong writing and communication skills are necessary.
