Primary Function of Organizational Unit

The University College is at the forefront of retention and graduation efforts by providing information to freshman and sophomore students transitioning into the university on majors, degree requirements, academic progress, academic standards, policies, programs, and student information systems through educational planning, problem-solving, and resource/referral information.

Primary Purpose of Position

The primary purpose of the Academic Success Coach position is to support undergraduate students in developing the skills, behaviors, and habits necessary for success in college. The Academic Success Coach fosters student persistence and degree completion by providing proactive, individualized support to a caseload of first- and/or second-year students. This role involves assessing students' academic and personal needs, developing individualized Student Success Plans, and connecting students with appropriate campus and community resources, including tutoring, the university counseling center, student health services, and outside agencies when necessary. The Academic Success Coach works closely with students to evaluate the effectiveness of these services, provide ongoing guidance and support, and address barriers to their success. The position is also responsible for regularly monitoring each student's progress, encouraging accountability, and helping students achieve the goals outlined in their Student Success Plans.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with students, colleagues, faculty, and campus partners.
  • Possess strong organizational and time-management skills to effectively manage student caseloads, appointments, responsibilities, and deadlines.
  • Maintain accurate, consistent, and confidential student records and documentation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of effective instructional practices, academic coaching strategies, and student success models.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively with diverse learners and provide individualized support to promote student success.
  • Work independently while also collaborating effectively with team members, campus departments, and other university stakeholders.
  • Evaluate student outcomes and staff performance to identify areas of success, opportunities for improvement, and appropriate interventions.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using technology, student information systems, and other digital tools to support student engagement and academic success.
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret student data to assess progress, identify trends, and inform student support strategies.
  • Prepare accurate reports and communicate data-driven findings to support departmental planning and decision-making.
  • Possess knowledge of the unique academic, developmental, and transitional needs of first-year, second year, and transfer students.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) required.
  • Master's degree (MA/MS) in counseling, student personnel administration, higher education, student affairs, or a related field preferred.
  • Educational background should demonstrate preparation to support undergraduate student development.
  • Ability to promote academic success and student retention.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Administrative
  • Provide general academic coaching to students through walk-in and scheduled appointments.
  • Assist students in understanding their academic requirements and degree progression.
  • Explain and clarify academic policies and procedures, including add/drop, withdrawal from the university, application for graduation, and pass/non-pass options.
  • Guide students in identifying appropriate academic resources and strategies to support their success.
  • Monitor students' academic progress and provide guidance on pathways to return to and maintain good academic standing.
  • Support students in developing action plans to address academic challenges and successfully progress toward degree completion.
Engagement and Collaboration
  • Provide academic coaching to students through walk-in and scheduled appointments.
  • Review students' coursework requirements, including syllabus expectations, to identify academic needs and areas for improvement.
  • Develop individualized success plans to address unsatisfactory academic progress and establish actionable goals.
  • Monitor student progress and provide ongoing guidance, accountability, and support toward academic improvement.
  • Identify barriers to student success and connect students with appropriate campus resources, services, and academic departments.
  • Collaborate with campus resources and departments to ensure students receive appropriate support based on their individual needs.
Knowledge - Professional
  • Participate in collaborative meetings with campus departments, stakeholders, and fellow academic coaches to stay informed about changes to university policies and procedures.
  • Share and exchange pertinent information, resources, and best practices to enhance student support and academic success.
  • Maintain current knowledge of university policies, procedures, programs, and services to provide accurate guidance to students.
  • Apply updated information to effectively support first- and second-year students throughout their academic matriculation and progression toward degree completion.
  • Collaborate across campus entities to ensure students are connected with appropriate resources and services based on their individual needs.
Managing Work Processes
  • Participate in regularly scheduled departmental staff meetings and university events.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to share information, discuss departmental priorities, and support student success initiatives.
  • Contribute to departmental activities, programs, and events that promote student engagement and academic success.
  • Stay informed about departmental updates, policies, procedures, and initiatives to effectively support students.
