For over three decades, the organization has partnered with Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Catholic schools, and families to promote the healthy development of vulnerable youth. United Stand focuses on helping students build resilience so they can grow into adults who positively impact their communities. Through school-based counseling, therapeutic interventions, academic support, and family engagement, United Stand offers stability, healing, and hope to students facing significant emotional, behavioral, and environmental challenges.

Role Description

The Academic Coach is a part or full-time, on-site role based in Chicago, IL, working directly with students in school settings. This role involves providing one-on-one and small-group academic coaching, with a focus on building skills in core subjects and strengthening study habits, organization, and goal-setting. The Academic Coach collaborates with school staff, counselors, and families to develop individualized support plans that address both academic and social-emotional needs. Daily responsibilities include monitoring student progress, delivering targeted instruction and interventions, documenting sessions, and communicating updates to teachers and caregivers. The Academic Coach also participates in team meetings, professional development, and school-wide initiatives that support vulnerable and trauma-exposed youth.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated proficiency in academic coaching and general coaching, with a focus on empowering students to set and achieve learning goals.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to build trust with students, families, and school staff and convey complex information in clear, accessible language.
  • Background in education and familiarity with K–12 academic standards, instructional strategies, and school-based support services.
  • Competence in mathematics support, including helping students strengthen foundational skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Commitment to trauma-informed, culturally responsive practices and a passion for working with underserved and vulnerable youth.
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries, manage confidential information, and document student progress accurately.
  • Experience in school or youth-serving environments is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field is strongly preferred.
