Job description

Faculty position employed by the University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine, practicing in UT Health East Texas facilities.

The UT Tyler School of Medicine - Academic Department Chair will be broadly responsible for the administration of strategic, academic, and clinical initiatives within the Department of Preventive, Occupational, and Environmental Medicine. The Chair will ensure excellence in community engagement, education, and research within their department, and collaborate with UT Health East Texas system leaders to deliver top-quality clinical care (where applicable). The role includes participation in hospital committees, administrative duties, and providing education and training to residents, medical students, and other trainees. The Chair will also engage in research and outreach activities and provide professional leadership for departmental activities.

This faculty role is hired at the Professor or Associate Professor rank, depending on education and experience.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Supporting and contributing to the mission of the School; establishing a vision for the department.
  2. Demonstrating scholarship and pursuing excellence through leadership and mentorship, fostering a robust scholarly and research program, including securing sponsored research funding and supporting ongoing departmental projects.
  3. Collaborating with Division Chiefs on faculty involvement decisions.
  4. Participating in annual budget planning with the Dean, Division Chiefs, and Budget Advisory Group, ensuring fair resource allocation.
  5. Monitoring departmental expenditures and reconciliations.
  6. Supporting faculty professional development and mentoring throughout their careers.
  7. Collaborating with Faculty Affairs and the Vice Dean on faculty appointment, promotion, and tenure processes.
  8. Performing administrative duties and participating in university governance and committees.
  9. Overseeing educational programs and leaders within the Department, in collaboration with Medical Education leadership.
  10. Providing teaching and supervision to residents, students, and staff in departmental educational programs.
  11. Enhancing the regional, national, and international reputation of the School and Department.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • ABPM board certification
  • At least 3 years of effective administrative/leadership experience in preventive, occupational, and environmental medicine, with success in research, education, clinical practice, and administration.
  • Participation in extramural funded clinical or public health research.
  • Ability to balance education, research, and clinical care missions.
  • Knowledge of academic medicine within the evolving healthcare landscape.
  • Success in program development and team leadership.
About UT Tyler School of Medicine:

The first medical school in East Texas and part of the UT System, it focuses on training healthcare professionals for rural and underserved communities. The school offers 20 residency and fellowship programs, and a Master of Biotechnology program emphasizing medical research and biotech innovation.
