Position Summary
Under general supervision of the Associate Director of Academic Advising, the Academic Advisor II provides general advising for first‑time freshmen, second‑year students on academic probation, and transfer/continuing students regarding General Education and graduation requirements.
Responsibilities
- Conduct individual advising sessions and group workshops on course selection, graduation plans, and academic policies.
- Develop and maintain individualized student education plans that align with student strengths, interests, and values.
- Collaborate with faculty, administrators, student organizations, and external agencies to support student success.
- Analyze student data to identify trends, intervene early, and contribute to program improvements.
Experience
- Two years of professional experience in student services within higher education, such as advising, admissions, or student programming.
- Experience working with students from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, including those at risk or on academic probation.
Education
- Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university in behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a related field.
- Master’s degree may substitute for one year of professional experience.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to independently prioritize, plan, and organize work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills to provide direct services to a diverse student population.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and university record systems such as PeopleSoft.
- Ability to interpret and apply moderately complex policies and procedures.
- Commitment to a welcoming and inclusive work environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, College Student Personnel, Educational Counseling, or a related field.
- Knowledge of General Education in the California State University system.
- General knowledge of other university student services.
- Availability to work occasional mornings, evenings, and weekends.
