Academic Advisor

Position Details

Academic Advising at The University of Tampa has an opening for an Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor at The University of Tampa provides guidance to undergraduate students regarding their degree progression. This position reports to the Director of Academic Advising and is located in Academic Advising within the Academic Success Center.

Responsibilities

  1. Serve as primary academic advisor for first-year and undecided students with a caseload of approximately 250-400 students. Assist students with identifying academic goals, major, degree progression, via drop-in advising, individual appointments (face-to-face and virtual), email, and group sessions. Refer to appropriate campus resources as applicable.
  2. Provide general information to undergraduate students and faculty/staff about academic-related issues, such as graduation requirements, academic policies/procedures, course planning, and registration.
  3. Assist with registration and advising for new first-year students and transfer students.
  4. Participate in Academic Success Center workshops, group presentations, and other university events; represent the Academic Success Center at recruiting and committee functions (some events may be scheduled on occasional evenings or weekends).
  5. Contribute to student success and retention initiatives.
  6. Maintain advising records and utilize UT information systems to support delivery of advising services.
  7. Work on special projects as assigned by the Director. Projects may include developing and producing mass content, maintaining office data, etc.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.
  9. May teach in the First-Year Studies program for additional compensation.
  10. May supervise undergraduate and graduate student workers.
  11. Contribute to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures and backgrounds.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree required.
  • Previous experience in a post-secondary academic setting with experience in advising and knowledge of university curriculum, programs, polices, and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, written communication, and computer skills (MS programs).
  • Ability to maintain a positive and objective approach when confronted with difficult situations.
  • Strong customer service skills, along with the ability to effectively interact with a diverse group of students, faculty, administrators, and staff.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage time, prioritize well, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to FERPA guidelines.
  • Knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn The University of Tampa software programs such as Workday, Microsoft Office, Navigate.
  • Willingness to embrace new technologies and innovative organizational practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2 or more years academic advising experience in a college or university setting.
  • Experience working with special populations and limited access majors.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the possibility of an occasional evening and/or weekend event.

Summer Hours: Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
