Job summary

California State University, Long Beach is seeking an Academic Advisor to guide undergraduate students through COB's degree requirements and university policies, contributing to student success and retention.

Under supervision of the Director of COB Center for Student Success, the advisor will help with program support, mentor new advisors, and coordinate with campus offices to provide comprehensive advising services for COB students.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a related field and two years of professional experience in a student services program area.
  • Demonstrated experience in academic advising in a college/vocational setting is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Independently advises undergraduate students about academic requirements.
  • Assists senior staff with maintenance duties of existing programs.
  • Assists senior staff with training of new advisors.
  • Serves as a COB referral source for other college and student service offices on campus.

Job Summary

The Academic Advisor, under the general supervision of the Director of COB Center for Student Success, advises undergraduate students regarding COB’s academic requirements for successful completion of their degree as well as university academic requirements, policies, and procedures. The Academic Advisor provides critical support for programs and initiatives designed to strengthen the academic success and retention of COB’s undergraduate students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Independently advises undergraduate students about academic requirements.
  • Assists senior-level staff members with maintenance duties of existing programs.
  • Assists senior-level staff members with training of new advisors.
  • Serves as a COB referral source for other college and student group advising units, the Learning Assistance Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Career Development Center, and other academic and student service offices on campus.

This is a temporary position for one year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

Compensation

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

  • Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $5,083 - $5,348 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.
  • CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,083- $7,228 per month.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Proven experience working with students, parents, faculty, and staff. Demonstrates proficiency in computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.). Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, professional demeanor and ability to be a team player. Exhibits strong oral and written communication skills. Exhibits excellent organizational skills, prioritizes responsibilities, and meets project deadlines. Exhibits strong critical and creative thinking skills, sound decision making and objectivity. Able to work flexible hours, including evenings, is desired.

Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a vision of excellence.

Education and Experience
  • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.
  • Demonstrated experience in academic advising in a college/vocational setting, preferred.
Physical Summary

Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects (10 pounds or less).

Additional Information

CSULB is not a sponsoring agency for staff and management positions (i.e. H-1B Visas).

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.
