Job summary

Loyola University Chicago is seeking an Academic Advisor to provide comprehensive academic advising to students, guide degree progress, and support their success and graduation.

Under supervision, you will communicate degree requirements, transfer credits, and policies with students, families, and staff, while updating student records and coordinating advising programs. Weekend/evening hours may be required.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling or related field.
  • 2 years or more of related experience in higher education.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite and email applications.
  • Flexibility to work weekends and evenings as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Under general direction, provides academic advising to students on course selection and degree requirements.
  • Conducts individual advising sessions to support student success and graduation.
  • Communicates transfer credits and degree requirements accurately to students and families.
  • Speaks to FERPA policies and university procedures with students, parents, and staff.
  • Maintains and updates student records and degree progress documentation.
  • Identifies students on probation and provides guidance and recommendations.
  • References campus resources and supports to promote persistence to graduation.
  • Presents academic workshops on topics like goal setting and transfer transitions.
  • Serves as liaison to academic departments to ensure accurate program requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities Under general direction, provides academic advising to students on course selection, requirements for selected area of concentration and a wide range of issues to support student success and graduation.

  • Care for our students through individual academic advising sessions, imparting a working knowledge of degree requirements and opportunities for students to achieve their academic, career, and life goals.
  • Assist, challenge, and support students in identifying and clarifying academic, career, and life goals and offer appropriate motivation and encouragement.
  • Be a proactive and constructive player within an advising team dedicated to student success.
  • Accurately and efficiently communicate transfer credit and remaining degree requirements (Core, School and major requirements) for a timely graduation using online and off-line resources.
  • Understand, convey, and implement academic policies, procedures, and protocols to students, parents, faculty, and other stakeholders, while upholding FERPA requirements and the highest ethical standards.
  • Assist students in resolving administrative issues related to their academic records and assist with the various duties related to registration issues.
  • Maintain and update student records, such as meeting notes, records relating to degree progress, correspondence, and other documentation when appropriate.
  • Identify, monitor, and provide guidance to students on academic probation. Make probation and dismissal recommendations.
  • Refer students directly to appropriate campus and off-campus resources to support their academic success.
  • Assist with initiatives on a departmental and inter-departmental level that support persistence through graduation.
  • Presents academic workshops on various topics, such as goal setting, transfer student transition, networking and interviewing skills, and graduate school preparation,
  • Serve as liaison to selected academic departments and schools as assigned; work with department chairs, program directors, and administrative staff to ensure accuracy and consistency in communication of program requirements.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of advising programs and outreach including orientation, academic probation advising, and early academic alerts.
  • Participate in the training and mentoring of new professional staff, as necessary.
  • Articulate and support the vision and the mission of the university.
  • Develop and demonstrate expertise in academic knowledge regarding program offerings and requirements.
  • Demonstrate Flexibility and adaptability to a fast paced, changing environment where responsibilities and duties may frequently change.
  • Some weekend and evening hours are required.

Minimum Education and/or Work Experience Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling or related field required and one to two years of related experience. Qualifications
