Job Overview

The Absence Compliance Counsel is an integral member of the SaaS product team, specializing in legal compliance of the company's absence management software with current and evolving U.S. federal and state leave laws and regulations. The Counsel works cross-functionally with product managers, engineers, and sometimes directly with customers to ensure that software features and updates accurately reflect relevant regulatory requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct ongoing analysis of U.S. federal and state leave laws—including FMLA, ADA, paid family/medical leave, unpaid regulatory leave, and military leave—translating legal requirements into actionable product specifications and support feature and user story creation.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in statutes, case law, and administrative guidance across all relevant U.S. jurisdictions, recommending timely updates to product features to maintain compliance.
  • Collaborate within agile product development cycles, advising product managers, designers, and engineering staff to ensure compliance throughout backlog grooming, sprint planning, and release reviews.
  • Partner on documentation efforts and with customer support teams to provide accurate compliance information in customer-facing materials, guides, and onboarding resources.
  • Respond to compliance questions from existing or prospective customers, including direct engagement in calls, emails, webinars, and product demos, addressing their regulatory concerns and showcasing the product's compliance capabilities.
  • Draft and regularly update customer-facing regulatory newsletters, FAQs, release notes, and client advisories focused on U.S. leave law topics.
  • Track ticketing or feedback around compliance queries in Jira, Confluence, or related systems, working with cross-functional teams to resolve items that impact customer trust or product compliance.
  • Serve as the primary internal resource for all questions and guidance related to U.S. leave law compliance in product settings; act as a resource on international or local (non-U.S.) leave law as a bonus area of expertise, but not as a core requirement.
  • Where necessary, engage with customer counsel to address any complex questions or differences of opinion to arrive at mutually agreed upon direction.
Required Qualifications and Technical Expertise
  • Juris Doctor (JD) and active U.S. bar membership.
  • 4+ years of experience with U.S. federal and state employment/leave law compliance (FMLA, ADA, paid sick/family leave, military leave).
Essential Attributes and Capabilities
  • Self-driven, highly motivated, outcome-focused
  • Strong ability to translate legal requirements into practical specifications for technical and non-legal audiences.
  • Skilled in interpreting and communicating the nuances of various state leave law programs and connecting product functionality to statutory requirements.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication, with a collaborative approach to cross-functional teamwork and customer engagement.
  • Effectively demonstrates a commitment to quality and a "do it right the first time" mindset
  • Strives to deliver the best customer experience and has an ambitious and growth mindset.
  • Experience and ability to collaborate with multiple teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, remotely, and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience working as embedded product counsel in an agile software development team.
  • Familiarity with Jira, Confluence, and similar software documentation or project management tools.
  • Knowledge of international or local (non-U.S.) leave law and ability to advise on the intersection of global compliance issues as a bonus.

As a member of a rapidly growing and dynamic organization, the successful candidate must be flexible and willing to take on new tasks and responsibilities as business needs evolve. The company reserves the right to vary, change, or update job duties and responsibilities based on business requirements. This role may require shifting priorities, learning new technologies, and contributing to projects outside of the initial scope.
