Job summary

Yulista Contract Services LLC seeks an Able Seaman to support ship operations and maintenance, standing watches and assisting with launch and recovery of small boats. The role requires maritime credentials and safety certifications.

Qualifications

  • Merchant Mariner Credential required.
  • National Able Seafarer (AB) Special Deck Rating required.
  • STCW Basic Training and core safety certifications required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine deck operations aboard the ship, such as preparing for departure or arrival.
  • Handle lines to moor the vessel to wharfs and tie up vessels to each other.
  • Operate and maintain deck machinery, such as winches and hoists.
  • Inspect, maintain, and secure cargo in compliance with load restrictions and damage prevention.
  • Maintain the ship’s surfaces by chipping rust, scaling, painting, and performing other maintenance work as necessary.
  • Stand watch to look for obstructions in the ship’s path, other vessels, and navigational aids such as buoys and lighthouses.
  • Participate in emergency drills, including fire, abandon ship, man overboard, and damage control drills.
  • Assist with launch and recovery of small boats used by the ship.

Primary Function

Able Seamen, also known as Able Bodied Seamen, perform a variety of tasks related to the operation and maintenance of a ship, under the direction of the ship’s captain or other officers. They are primarily responsible for supporting the ship’s operations and maintenance, with daily duties and responsibilities, including standing as a lookout for the navigational watch and completing engineering rounds while underway.

Essential Duties
  • Perform routine deck operations aboard the ship, such as preparing for departure or arrival.
  • Handle lines to moor the vessel to wharfs and tie up vessels to each other.
  • Operate and maintain deck machinery, such as winches and hoists.
  • Inspect, maintain, and secure cargo in compliance with load restrictions and damage prevention.
  • Maintain the ship’s surfaces by chipping rust, scaling, painting, and performing other maintenance work as necessary.

  • Maritime knowledge: Proficiency in seamanship, knot tying, line handling, and basic navigation tools such as radar, GPS, and charts.
  • Physical fitness required to perform physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions, including heavy lifting and long hours.
  • Safety competence: Knowledge of lifesaving equipment, firefighting techniques, and emergency response protocols.
Required Qualifications
  • Merchant Mariner Credential.

  • High Speed Craft Qualification.
  • Certificate of Completion from a USCG-approved or DOD-approved facility for: U.S. Navy Naval X-Craft High Speed Craft Type Rating Program including Assistant Type Rating Instructor for Deck Machinery or obtain qualification within sixty (60) days after vessel availability following contract award.
