Job summary

Centerline Logistics is seeking an experienced Tank Barge PIC to oversee the safe transfer of petroleum products between barges, ships, and facilities, including gauge reports and loading paperwork.

The role requires a valid Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document with PIC endorsement, TWIC, and HAZWOPER within 90 days of hire, plus strong emergency response and communication skills. Willingness to work variable hours and travel may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and operate tank barge systems and associated equipment.
  • Complete loading/discharge gauge reports and related paperwork.
  • Inspect vessel and ensure Coast Guard/state regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain safety, communications, and coordination with crews and facilities.
  • Participate in drills and emergency response activities.
  • Perform routine maintenance and inspections on propulsion and cargo systems.
  • Ensure proper operation of valves, pumps, and hoses and check for leaks.
  • Partner with customers and ensure professional relations and safe operations.

Job description

Overview

Responsible for the safe and efficient transfer of petroleum products between barges, ships, and facilities including completion of bills of lading and gauge reports.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor product level in tanks, operate diesel engines, operate cargo pumps, operate tank/pipeline valves, and operate manual and hydraulic booms.
  • Adjust and secure barge lines.
  • Complete loading and discharge gauge reports. Load 55 gallon drums.
  • Inspect vessel for Coast Guard and state regulatory compliance.
  • Communicate with foreign crews and oil facility personnel.
  • Participate in onboard drills with tug crews when job permits.
  • Check oil and water in any equipment on board before putting in use.
  • Operate diesel engines, cargo pumps, hydraulic booms, cargo gear, gate valves, and butterfly valves.
  • General barge maintenance and cleanliness.
  • Hydrostatic testing of cargo hoses and piping.
  • Change engine oil and filters.
  • Splice barge lines and boom running gear.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a tank barge PIC on oil barges required.
  • Valid Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document with PIC endorsement required.
  • Experience with clean product and multiple cargos required.
  • Western Alaska experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Coast Guard and state requirements for transfer operations.
  • Valid first aid/CPR training certificate.
  • Complete HAZWOPER training within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to think and respond quickly to emergency situations (oil spills, mechanical failures, etc.).
  • Self-motivated.
  • Ability to maintain professional relations with customers.
  • Must have physical ability to maneuver cargo hoses, handle barge lines and board vessels by use of an Accommodation ladder, Jacob's ladder or tugboat.
  • Must not be afraid of heights.
  • Must possess good communication skills by voice and/or visual hand signals.
  • Ability to complete accurate paperwork. Knowledge of basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, and divide).
  • Must be able to read, speak, and understand English over telephone and/or radio.
  • Valid TWIC.
  • Valid state driver's license.
Job Condition and Environment
  • Employee is responsible for paying travel fees to and from Seattle, WA when crewing up for Olympic Tug and Barge.
  • Use of Air purifying respirator, Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), air monitoring equipment, hearing protection, VHF radio, hand tools, tow lines, high level alarms and thermometer.
  • Exposure to all weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.)
  • Olympic Tug & Barge vessels occasionally travel into Canada.
Expected Hours of Work
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours
  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and at night. Willing to take call outs.
