Job description

The Child Support Enforcement Division of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office represents the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) in actions to establish, enforce, and modify child support obligations under Title IV-D of the Social Security Act. The Division provides legal representation in child support matters across 94 counties in Illinois and works closely with HFS staff and caseworkers who refer matters for court action. In addition, the Division represents HFS and the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS) in administrative review and lien enforcement matters involving public assistance eligibility, recovery of excess assistance, personal injury liens, estate claims, and other civil matters.

The Chicago Assistant Attorney General position is a specialized role within the Division. Unlike most positions, this attorney does not maintain a regular child support call. Instead, the attorney represents HFS in complex or high-priority post-child support and administrative review actions and appeals in Cook, DuPage, Kane, and Lake Counties. The attorney also handles child support cases when a State’s Attorney’s Office cannot act due to a conflict of interest or because the case falls outside the scope of its contract. Additional responsibilities include litigating matters such as personal injury lien recoveries, decedent and disabled-person estate claims, foreclosure actions, and other specialized civil cases, as well as assisting with case coverage in other AG counties when needed.

The position offers a diverse mix of courtroom and written advocacy, requiring strong research, writing, and organizational skills. The attorney must be able to manage multiple cases, meet filing deadlines, and appear in court on short notice. The role involves close collaboration with Division leadership, HFS/DCSS program staff, and agency counsel, along with the ability to work independently, analyze complex legal issues, and make practical legal decisions. Knowledge of civil procedure, administrative review, and motion practice is essential. Familiarity with HFS administrative processes is helpful. Some travel to surrounding counties is required.

Salaries are commensurate with number of years of practice as a licensed attorney and range from $ 82,000 to $ 107,550.
