Overview

Sumter Utilities, Inc. (a Quanta Services company) seeks Overhead A Class Journeyman Lineman for a local co-op.

Successful candidates will possess existing experience working together as a construction crew. Preference may also be given to candidates who are able to bring along additional qualified candidates to form entire work crews.

Responsibilities

A Lineman:

1. Able to perform rigorous physical labor as required, including but not limited to climbing, rigging, lifting, and rescue operations.
2. Able to identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
3. Proficient in all aspects of energized line working energized voltage conductors greater than 600 volts.
4. Possess professional demeanor and interact positively with fellow crew members, the general public, and customer representatives.
5. Proficient in understanding and reading blueprints.
6. Able to properly sag wire.
7. Capable of leading a crew in the assembly and erection of structures to all heights, in the absence of the Crew Foreman or with minimal supervision.
8. Understands dead-ending and sagging operations for all conductors.
9. Capable of executing hot line work on conductor systems.
10. Proficient at operation of Bucket Truck, Digger Derrick, Backhoe, and others.
11. Proficient in Pole/Tower Climbing.
12. Proficient in all aspects of heavy lifting and rigging.
13. Must be familiar with induced voltage.
14. Understands grounding procedures.
15. Capable of working at heights and/or in confined spaces.
16. Capable of properly installing and removing PPE and cover-up.
17. Must be able to climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) and possess the necessary tools to do so.
18. Understands how to phase out a line using phasing sticks.
19. Understands proper use of phasing sticks.
20. Able to identify and locate puller and tensioner setups.
21. Able/willing to function within a team environment and share knowledge with fellow crew members as appropriate.
22. Capable of planning safe work based on a job print or work order.
23. Understands how to obtain a "one shot" on a recloser.
24. Understands minimum approach distance.
25. Understands flag and tag procedures.
26. Capable of performing basic bucket rescue/escape.
27. Must be able to effectively lead a Job Task Safety Analysis meeting or tailgate briefing.
28. Capable of safely installing and removing mechanical jumpers.
29. Possess knowledge to properly inspect rubber goods, cover, and PPE.

Qualifications

The employee is required to sit; frequently climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or maneuver up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or maneuver up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Work is primarily performed outdoors, so physical exposure to often extreme weather conditions, animals, insects, and other outdoor hazards is unavoidable and required.
