HEAD ATHLETIC COACH JOB DESCRIPTION
Position: Head Athletic Coach
Qualifications:
- Valid South Dakota teaching certificate/coaching endorsement
- Valid SDHSAA Coaches Education Program (Fundamentals of Coaching, First Aid & Concussion in Sports)
- Employed as a teacher in the Brookings School District, preferred but not required.
- Ability to organize and supervise a total (7-V) sports program.
- Previous successful coaching experience in the assigned sport.
- Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects and strategies of the sport and a commitment to examining new theories and methods in the sport.
Reports To: Activities Administrator, who provides supervision, training, and evaluation in conjunction with the high school principal.
The head coach will advise, coordinate, train, and support a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in collaboration with the activities director and building principals.
Basic Function:
To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. The student shall also receive instruction that will lead to the formulation of moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence.
Parameters:
- The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community’s image of the entire school district. This public exposure requires considerable responsibility and involves community/parental pressure for winning performances that must not override the development of good sportsmanship and citizenship skills.
- The position includes other aspects such as stress, time commitment, risk management, and due process predicaments.
- This job description aims to provide sufficient guidance for successful functioning. In cases not specifically covered, a coach will exercise common sense and seek assistance from the activities director.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implement activity policies of the Board of Education and Brookings High School.
- Know and enforce school district, SDHSAA, and ESD Athletic Conference rules and regulations.
- Follow proper administrative lines of authority and communicate through proper channels. Attend all required meetings.
Leadership Responsibilities:
- Establish the philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff. Organize conferences, clinics, and staff meetings.
- Encourage professional growth among staff.
- Delegate duties, supervise, and evaluate staff effectiveness.
- Maintain discipline, resolve grievances, and foster morale and cooperation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Activities Administrator.
Administrative Duties:
- Assist with scheduling, transportation, awards, and event management.
- Prepare for sport events and practices, and adhere to facility schedules.
- Document physical examinations, insurance, parental consent, and eligibility.
- Supervise athletic facilities and equipment.
- Advise on policy or procedural changes.
Student Responsibilities:
- Provide training rules and regulations compatible with the Code of Conduct.
- Monitor student-athletes’ grades and conduct.
- Supervise and guide athletes during practices, games, and travel.
- Ensure compliance with injury and emergency policies.
- Coordinate with athletic trainers and supervise student managers and statisticians.
- Handle discipline, communicate with parents, and assist with post-secondary planning.
- Participate in budgeting and equipment management.
Public Relations:
- Organize pre-season meetings with parents, players, and coaches.
- Promote the sport through media, youth programs, and civic groups.
- Provide timely and accurate releases to the media.
- Maintain good relations with media, booster clubs, parents, spectators, and officials.
