Montgomery Public Schools seeks a reliable Custodian to maintain school buildings and grounds in a clean, safe condition. The role requires multi-tasking, basic reporting, and strong teamwork to support daily school operations.

Responsibilities include cleaning, basic maintenance, and using technology safely; strong attendance and flexibility are essential as part of a large educational community in Alabama.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Good public relations skills.
  • Ability to read instructions and write brief reports.
  • Ability to use technology and operate machinery associated with job responsibilities.
  • Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups.
  • Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Proficiency in oral, written, electronic communications and able to use various technological devices/software, and ability to articulate clearly to others.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule if needed.
  • Ability to climb, stoop, bend, and lift as needed.
  • Such alternative qualifications to those listed as the Board may require.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates support for the school system, its purpose, direction, and priorities.
  • Demonstrates the ability to multi-task and to prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Maintains confidentiality of any Board of Education business, its staff, and its students.
  • Demonstrates and models regular and predictable attendance.
  • Demonstrates professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Uses technology for communication, presentations, research, data analysis, budgeting, record keeping, reporting, scheduling, and other job responsibilities as required.
  • Keeps building and grounds clean and neat (sidewalks, entrances, offices, classrooms, restrooms, etc.).
  • Performs preventative maintenance (cleaning filters, vents, etc.)
  • Reports maintenance needs to local school administration.
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums floors.
  • Dusts furniture, cleans windows, cleans baseboards, buffs and waxes floors as needed and in accordance with established schedules and guideline.
  • Cleans and disinfects all restrooms and restroom equipment.
  • Disinfects desks, tables, and counters.
  • Uses chemicals, cleaners, and equipment according to established safety guidelines.
  • Reports potential problems, unusual events or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns, and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
  • Properly uses and cares for tools, equipment and materials resources of the school system.
  • Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with board policies and procedures.
  • Maintains inventory of needed supplies, equipment, and tools and notifies appropriate personnel when re-stocking or replacements are needed.
  • Performs other job-related duties as directed by the Principal.
