Job description

Established in 1998 with 97 students, CCCS has steadily increased to more than 4,000 students in grades K-8 across 12 state-of-the-art buildings on four campuses. The school is a true community success story that has transformed the lives of thousands of students and their families, while breathing life back into a city that was once one of Philadelphia’s most vibrant manufacturing suburbs.

Job Summary:

To perform in such a way that he/she facilitates, stimulates, and guides the learning of students and interrelates in a professional manner with other teachers and community members for the purpose of remediating and assisting students with language problems as a results of a second language background.

Essential Functions:

  1. Acts as a liaison between the student and other teachers, staff members and family.
  2. Recommends entry and exit of students from the ESL program based on multiple criteria established by the school.
  3. Responsible for notifying parents of a student’s entrance and exit from the ESL program within the state-mandated time period.
  4. Annually administers the state-mandated ACCESS for English Language Learners (ELL) assessment to all ESL students.
  5. Tracks the performance of former ESL students for a minimum of two years using appropriate forms to ensure continued student success.
  6. Maintains and communicates accurate and up-to-date data on all students.
  7. Identifies a continuum of long and short-term course objectives consistent with the school approved curriculum.
  8. Plans, prepares, and delivers lessons for students based on available research of “best practices” in the field of ESL.
  9. Selects and/or modifies appropriate learning materials from appropriate sources (texts, supplements, AV materials, etc.) and shares with regular classroom teachers.
  10. Consults and collaborates with classroom teachers to provide mainstream support for ESL students.
  11. Maintains ongoing communication with the parents of ESL students.
  12. Productively interacts with classroom teachers and child study team members on a regular basis to monitor the classroom program and needs of ESL and ELL students.
  13. Responsible for the review and updating of the ESL/ELL curriculum on an annual basis.
  14. Participates in school-wide in-servicing as it relates to ESL and bilingual education.
  15. Complies with policies, regulations and procedures of Chester Community Charter School; communicates effectively with parents and work collaboratively with staff.
  16. Displays high-level professional conduct and image at all times; establishes and maintains an acceptable attendance record; and participates in extra-curricular activities and/or leadership roles outside the classroom.
  17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education from an accredited college or university.
  • Pennsylvania Criminal Record Check Clearance.
  • Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance.
  • FBI Criminal Background Clearance.

Certificates/Licenses:

  • Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania ESL Program Specialist Certificate (PK-12).

Demonstrated Knowledge of:

  1. The principles, practices and methods of grade level education when teaching ESL/ELL learners.
  2. Familiar with all state regulations as they pertain to ESL, as stated in the Pennsylvania Administrative Code and related laws and regulations.
  3. The contents, materials, methodologies and practices utilized within ESL/ELL education at the respective grade level.
  4. Critical thinking methodologies and problem-solving techniques.
  5. Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC) standards.
  6. Response to Interventions (RTII).
  7. Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS).

Demonstrated Ability to:

  1. Assess students’ needs and learning styles and to design appropriate differentiated instruction to meet their needs while providing appropriate ESL/ELL programming.
  2. Use and apply simulations and technological innovations in the classroom in pursuit of instructional strategies.
  3. Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  4. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, administrators, supportive staff, parents and students.
