Job description

OVERVIEW

This position is for locators who can independently manage assigned tickets, troubleshoot nonroutine conditions, maintain accurate documentation, and provide practical assistance to less-experienced teammates.

DURING YOUR WORK DAY, YOU WILL:
  • Independently review 811 ticket instructions, excavation limits, utility maps, and available records to plan assigned locating work.
  • Select and apply appropriate electromagnetic locating methods within your training and authorization. Verify indications and recognize interference, conflicting information, and other limitations.
  • Locate and accurately mark the assigned underground utility.
  • Troubleshoot nonroutine locating conditions and request supervisor or technical assistance when uncertainty remains. Escalate conditions that prevent a supported mark, clearance, or completion.
  • Manage assigned tickets by due time, travel, field conditions, and required service commitments while maintaining safe, accurate work.
  • Maintain clear notes, required post-locate photographs, accurate positive responses, and complete ticket records in the assigned system.
  • Communicate field issues, access restrictions, delays, and service needs to the appropriate supervisor, coordinator, excavator, or client representative.
  • Assist less-experienced locators with approved methods, documentation, and field questions. Share useful practices and provide feedback through the Field Supervisor.
  • Support field reviews, damage or near-miss fact gathering, and corrective actions as assigned. Preserve relevant records and report facts accurately.
  • Complete daily safety requirements, maintain equipment readiness, and participate in scheduled emergency/on-call coverage.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
  • Six to ten years of hands-on underground utility locating experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete assigned locates independently, interpret ticket instructions and maps, and recognize the limits of available locating evidence.
  • Working knowledge of electromagnetic locating receivers and transmitters, troubleshooting methods, positive responses, and 811 ticket documentation.
  • Ability to manage assigned priorities, communicate service risks, and seek assistance before uncertainty becomes a quality or safety issue.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to assist developing locators while following established company and client methods.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate clearly with coworkers, supervisors, excavators, property owners, and client representatives.
  • Ability to use mobile devices, email, and assigned ticket-management applications, with training provided as needed.
  • Ability to travel locally each workday throughout the assigned service area and meet the assigned work schedule, including overtime and scheduled emergency/on-call coverage; occasional overnight travel will be required.
  • Work 50 or more hours during busy periods, as required.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, carry, and operate equipment as needed on the project.
  • Ability to perform the essential outdoor field duties, including walking on uneven terrain, working in varying weather, and carrying and operating locating equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • A valid driver's license and acceptable motor vehicle record, with successful completion of required background screening and drug testing.
WHAT WILL MAKE YOU STAND OUT:
  • Hands-on underground electric power locating experience.
  • Experience locating multiple utility types and resolving difficult or conflicting field conditions.
  • Experience with UtiliSphere or comparable 811 ticket-management systems.
