Role Mission

IDEA ELA teachers are responsible for increasing student achievement and mastery of grade-level content. They deliver pre-AP instruction that equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to access AP and high school level ELA curriculum. Teachers provide quality instruction and support to facilitate student learning and comprehension, playing a critical role in students’ path to and through college.

At IDEA, the goal is to prepare students to be literate thinkers in school, college, and beyond. They must engage with complex texts independently, read for knowledge, respond through writing and speaking, navigate online media, discern audience and purpose, seek evidence, and appreciate diverse cultures and perspectives. Reading is state-assessed in grades 6-8; writing in 7th grade.

What We Offer

Compensation

  • The starting salary for teachers with 0 years of experience is $62,500. Additional stipends ranging from $500 to $4,000 are available based on certifications, credentials, and campus leadership roles. There are opportunities to earn up to $10,000 extra through our Teacher Career Pathway. Visit our compensation and benefits page for more details.
  • Additional hourly pay is provided for after-school tutoring or Saturday school as assigned.

What You Bring — Competencies

Qualifications

  • High proficiency in ELA, demonstrated through certification, field of study, or work experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution required.
  • Experience in a K-12 classroom preferred.
  • State certification preferred but not required.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Relevant coursework or experience in ELA.
  • Knowledge of core academic subjects and ability to pass IDEA’s content assessments.
  • Understanding of curricula and instructional practices.
  • Ability to instruct students and manage behavior effectively.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Adaptability to various school situations.
Responsibilities

What You’ll Do — Accountabilities

  • Implement state standards and IDEA curricula and assessments.
  • Master and deliver grade-level content and texts.
  • Submit weekly lesson plans two weeks in advance for feedback.
  • Use assessments to monitor and adjust instruction; update gradebook weekly.
  • Communicate student progress regularly with students and families.
  • Use technology effectively to enhance achievement and manage tasks.
  • Implement behavior management systems that foster character and community.
  • Contribute to a positive school culture.
  • Build trusting relationships with students and families.
  • Host tutoring sessions as needed.
  • Participate in meetings, duties, and professional development.
  • Spend at least 40 hours weekly at school.
  • Additional duties may include after-school or Saturday tutoring based on student needs.
