Description of The UCAP School: Since 1989, the UCAP (Unity, Community, Achievement, Possibility) School, located in Providence, has served Rhode Island as an independent public school dedicated to balancing the scale for students at risk of falling behind. The UCAP School works with approximately 140 students in grades 7 and 8. All students selected for the program have had a history of academic challenges and many have repeated at least one grade. Students are given the opportunity to accelerate in grade if they have been held back, and those who have not, are working towards addressing their own learning loss so that when they do return to their sending districts, they are ready to engage with on grade level work. Through a program of accelerated instruction, counseling and career education, the mission of the staff of The UCAP School is to prepare these students for successful transition into high school. UCAP's supportive learning community has successfully helped over 4500 Rhode Island middle school students through personalized, enriched journeys. Basic Function of a Science Educator at UCAP: Works collaboratively with other staff to develop, implement, and assess the total educational program of The UCAP School; works with a team that is responsible for the education of 70-80 students; works with all school and community resources to ensure the students' success. Specific Duties: Possesses a passion for science, a student-centered approach to science teaching and learning, and a commitment to continuing education. Designs, develops and implements quality science lesson plans to support curriculum, instruction and assessment, in accordance with the Next Generation Science Standards, best practices in science, and the goals of UCAP. Implements and supports literacy of all students, including regular assessments and interventions for students in greatest need. Stays current on science teaching and learning practices entrenched in research such as the A Framework for K12 Science Education (NRC, 2012), maintains a willingness to think innovatively and engages with academic programming using a student-centered approach. Maintains timely arrival to school, classes and in other responsibilities where the staff member is expected to perform. Is well prepared for and conducts productive classes, based on the concepts of differentiation and acceleration. Notifies the Director or Designee of any situations involving student management, and works collaboratively with teachers, counselors, and the Director to see that these situations are handled in a timely and effective manner. Works with other staff on such things as interdisciplinary projects, thematic units, and other aspects of curriculum to see that students are presented with a coordinated instructional program. Familiarize themselves with the academic and personal history of their advisees through research of records, home visits, calls to homes, and meetings with students, as well as full engagement in an advisory program. Maintains proper records of all students and advisees. Develops individual goals in conjunction with UCAP's strategic plan and works with colleagues to provide peer support and obtain feedback on classroom practices, curriculum, and instruction. Works with Guidance Counselor and Social Worker on all matters relating to student counseling, parent outreach, and involvement of community agencies or other resources, as needed. Helps in the planning and implementation of a variety of other non-class activities such as: field trips, career education, parent workshops, special projects, and supervision of students. Performs other duties as requested by the Director. Minimum Requirements: Has a degree in science education or related area and a Rhode Island Certification in science education. Possesses a deep understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards and the three-dimensions of the A Framework for K-12 Science Education. Awareness of science safety professional practices and legal standards and establishes classroom, lab, and field trip expectations with an eye on safety. Strong communication skills in speaking and writing, and a history of strong interpersonal skills and positive and productive relationships with students. Practical experience with MS Office, Google Classroom, and other software. Additional Requirements Desired: A willingness to work as a member of a professional educational team. A willingness and ability to take on a host of organizational responsibilities that are necessary for individualized instruction, team teaching, and interdisciplinary projects. Enthusiasm to maintain a "learner and growth mindset." A concern for students as individuals, and a willingness to help ensure that their lives outside of class and school are conducive to their academic and personal success. Speaking ability in Spanish or Portuguese is preferred but not required. Term of Appointment As arranged with the Executive Director.
