The Fleet Management Department (also known as “Central Shops”) provides fleet services to over 70 City departments with a combined municipal fleet of approximately 8,000 units. Central Shops is responsible for asset management, maintenance and repairs, motor pools, fueling services, vehicle acquisitions and disposals, equipment specification writing, fueling, and more. Central Shops operates six maintenance and repair facilities across the City and maintains and repairs various types of vehicles and fleet equipment, ranging from passenger vehicles to highly specialized equipment like fire engines and street sweepers. In addition to these fleet management functions, the Department also manages the administrative functions, including procurement, finance, performance reporting, department service level agreements, vehicle leasing and pool programs, legislative mandates, strategies for building a zero emissions fleet, and more.

Under direction, the 7322 Automotive Body & Fender Worker Assistant Supervisor performs skilled work in connection with the maintenance and repair of the exterior and interior bodies of a wide variety of equipment, including automotive and transit equipment; exercises work direction over a crew of automotive body and fender workers engaged in such work; and performs related duties as required. Requires responsibility for explaining and carrying out work methods and procedures.

1. Supervises and participates in fabricating sheet metal parts for the repair or replacement of damaged motor vehicle and transit equipment bodies, fenders and radiators; fabricates and repairs a variety of metal auxiliary equipment on motor vehicles.

2. Supervises and participates in the straightening, replacement and repair of fenders, panels and other exterior parts of motor vehicle equipment.

3. Assigns tasks and operates gas and electric welding equipment in the repair of bodies, frames and radiators on a variety of automotive equipment; repairs metal bodies and frames on vehicles and equipment.

4. Repairs and replaces windows, fenders and weather stripping on transit equipment. Nature of work involves: some physical effort and dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs and body; continuous exposure to physical and working conditions where minor injuries may be incurred.

How to qualify

Completion of high school or equivalent, supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the craft AND five years of experience as a journeyman auto body and fender worker; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to evaluate and write estimates for damaged vehicles and fleet equipment.
  • Proficiency in using Chief equipment to straighten and measure vehicle frames and unibodies.
  • Relevant experience meeting the minimum qualifications (MQs) within the last ten years.
