Job summary

Phoenix Tailings is seeking an execution-oriented Project Engineer I – Recycling to be in the field daily, leading facility expansion and new construction. You will coordinate with internal engineering, EPC partners, and contractors to ensure installation, startup, and commissioning of key process systems.

Ideal candidates have a BS in chemical or mechanical engineering, 0–4 years of experience in related capital projects, and comfort working in a manufacturing environment five days a week.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 0–4 years of experience in capital projects, plant engineering, construction support, commissioning/startup, industrial operations, or EPC execution.
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment 5 days a week.
  • Ability to read and redline drawings and coordinate feedback with contractors.
  • Strong technical fundamentals and the ability to translate process intent into physical systems.
  • Growth mindset with willingness to take informed risks and learn quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Support owner-side engineering execution for facility expansion and construction, focusing on recycling and byproduct recovery.
  • Review contractor deliverables (PFDs/P&IDs, layouts, isometrics, GA drawings, vendor data sheets) for constructability and operability.
  • Support installation planning and field execution, including equipment setting, tie-ins, piping runs, instrumentation, and utility connections.
  • Coordinate technical feedback with contractors (RFIs, redlines, field changes, punchlists, turnover packages).
  • Support procurement by reviewing vendor submittals and coordinating FAT/SAT as needed.
  • Assist in commissioning and startup activities: pre-startup safety reviews, HAZOPs, checkouts, loop checks, water runs, stabilization.

Who We Are Looking For:

Phoenix Tailings is looking for an execution-oriented Project Engineer I – Recycling who wants to be in the field every day helping build first-of-a-kind, cutting-edge manufacturing processes. You will be part of the project management team leading facility expansion and new construction, working closely with internal engineering, EPC partners, and contractors to coordinate installation, field execution, and startup of key process systems.

Experience supporting capital projects, including managing external contractors, developing SOWs and RFPs, and navigating purchase order and change management processes, will be highly valuable in this role. Our facilities sit at the fast-paced intersection of rare earth metals and climate technology. The right candidate moves quickly, takes ownership, and is energized by Phoenix’s mission.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support Phoenix’s owner-side engineering execution for facility expansion and construction workstreams, with a focus on recycling and byproduct recovery systems
  • Review contractor deliverables (PFDs/P&IDs, layouts, isometrics, equipment GA drawings, vendor data sheets, I&E packages) for constructability, operability, and alignment with Phoenix process intent
  • Support installation planning and field execution, including equipment setting, tie-ins, piping runs, instrumentation installation, and utility connections
  • Manage technical coordination with contractors in the field (RFIs, redlines, field changes, punchlists, turnover packages, as-builts)
  • Support procurement execution by reviewing vendor submittals, coordinating FAT/SAT needs where applicable, and ensuring equipment meets performance requirements
  • Participate in commissioning and startup activities: pre-startup safety reviews, HAZOPs, checkouts, loop checks support, water runs, initial operations support, and stabilization
Qualifications:
  • B.S. in a Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related physical engineering discipline
  • 0 – 4 years of experience (internships, co-ops, or full-time) in one or more of the following: capital projects, plant engineering, construction support, commissioning/startup, industrial operations, or EPC/contractor execution
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment 5 days a week
  • Ability to read and redline drawings (P&IDs, isometrics, equipment layouts) and coordinate technical feedback with contractors
  • Strong technical fundamentals and the ability to turn process intent into physical systems that work
  • A growth mindset with comfort taking informed risks, learning from failures, and improving fast
