Job summary

The City of Brownsville is seeking a Librarian to supervise library staff and deliver excellent customer service at the City Library Main Branch. The Librarian reports to the Assistant Library Branch Manager and oversees daily operations and programs.

The position requires a Master’s in Library Science or equivalent, a Texas driver’s license, and experience in leadership, budgeting, and community outreach to support library patrons.

Job Summary

The Librarian is responsible for supervising library employees, providing excellent customer service, professional research and reference services for the community and organization, to ensure efficient library operations and administration and to effectively maintain the library and its materials. The Librarian reports to the Assistant Library Branch Manager.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills
  • Serves as a department's liaison with supporting and reinforcing department objectives through the crew/front line supervisors and assists with day-to-day management and administrative functions.
  • Provides training and supervises the work activities of assigned library personnel, volunteers and individuals performing community service; prepares staff schedules.
  • Reports events and activities to Library Administration.
  • Demonstrates effective and participatory leadership, comfortable interacting with staff and patrons.
  • Collaborates with team members to develop, implement and market library services and programs.
  • Present potential new ideas and concepts for programming, new technologies, etc. to Library Administration for possible implementation to benefit library patrons and/or staff.
  • Participates in collection development by analyzing library users’ interests, reviewing available publications and making purchase recommendations of book and non-book materials for the library patrons.
  • Required to operate (use) technology devices such as mobile devices, projectors, computers, laptops, inflatable planetarium system, postal machines, and Point of Sale (POS) system.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Library Administration.
  • Performs basic accounting functions.
  • Performs various instructional tours.
  • Responsible for opening and securing of facility.
  • Maintains daily statistics.
Minimum Education & Experience

Master’s degree plus one year of experience, or bachelor’s degree plus three years of experience, or high school graduation or GED plus seven years of experience.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Valid Texas Driver’s License.
Requires a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA Institution.

Independence & Judgement

Proficient level of judgment with planning, leading, organizing, recognizing, and resolving issues or problems; requires very little supervision.

Initiative & Ingenuity

General guidelines: requires a lot of interpretation and non-standard responses to varied situations; have to figure out where to go for answers; must take multiple factors into account; some control over priorities.

Supervisory & Responsibility

Regularly assigns and monitors the work for three or more employees; has knowledge of long-term plans and goals for the department.

Financial Responsibility

Takes money (fines, fees, etc.), gives receipts, does own balancing; no decision making; authorizes payment of accounts payable based on matching invoices; handles petty cash; makes purchases over $200.
