Job summary

Southeast Health is seeking a phlebotomist to perform venipuncture, accessioning, and related duties across hospital and outpatient labs. The role requires patient identification, proper specimen labeling, STAT draw prioritization, and timely specimen transport.

Under supervision, you may train new staff and interns, and participate in safety programs while maintaining professionalism and teamwork in a fast-paced lab setting.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent of four years of high school education preferred.
  • One year of full-time experience preferred.
  • Certification eligible with a National Phlebotomy Association preferred.
  • Proficient in LIS Accessioning and Reference Laboratory Send-outs.

Responsibilities

  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick, and bleeding time) according to established procedure; must identify patients and properly label specimen tubes; must determine priority of STAT draws; must ensure timely transport of all patient specimens to lab for testing; must utilize computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions; must organize assigned work and accurately complete workload statistics.

Job Description Summary

Performs phlebotomy and accessioning functions and non-technical duties in areas including the hospital laboratory, outpatient, and off-site services.

Minimum Requirements
  • Equivalent of four years of high school education preferred;
  • One year of full-time experience preferred;
  • Certification eligible with a National Phlebotomy Association preferred;
  • Proficient in LIS Accessioning and Reference Laboratory Send-outs;
Responsibilities
  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick, and bleeding time) according to established procedure; must identify patients and properly label specimen tubes; must determine priority of STAT draws; must ensure timely transport of all patient specimens to lab for testing; must utilize computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions; must organize assigned work and accurately complete workload statistics;
  • Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments when needed to ensure an orderly work flow;
  • Under supervision will help in the training of new employees and student interns at the hospital in the performance of phlebotomy duties;
  • Follows all organizational and department or unit policies and procedures;
  • Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards; responsibly follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens;
  • Readily accepts changes in assignment; performs work level of equal skill and responsibility as needed; may also perform work of a higher level in preparation for increased responsibility, and may be required to do work of lesser responsibility when the workload of the department so requires;
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment;
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intradepartmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives;
  • Will act as a receptionist, greet patients, and answer phones in the outpatient lab when required;
  • Is responsible for the daily cleaning of equipment and maintaining neatness throughout the department;
  • Records daily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas;
  • Performance of electrocardiograms;
