Temporary-Exempt ( TEX ). Exempt employees are considered “at will” and serve at the discretion of the appointing officer. One (1) “Limited Hours” position. Appointment of either full-time or part-time work schedule against a temporary requisition designated as Limited Hours to a total of 900 work hours per fiscal year. The 3248 TIA Pianist provides support for the education of students in the Music and Theatre Arts department, in particular for voice and choir students, but also occasionally other areas needing a pianist. The pianist provides musical accompaniment for students of varying skill levels, from “pitch learners” to highly skilled students. They help students improve musical accuracy (pitch, rhythm, text) and develop musical interpretations. Note: This is not a remote work position and requires office/on-site presence.
Please note the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the 3248 Pianist class code and not intended to be an inclusive list.
Essential Functions
1. Accompanies for choral classes, plays, productions, dance, and soloists (e.g. recording practice sessions, providing feedback, providing adequate rehearsal and coaching, etc.) for the purpose of assisting faculty with student progress and following instructor guidelines.
2. Analyzes assigned music prior to rehearsal and performances (e.g. correct tempos, challenging transitions, dynamics, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring efficient use of rehearsal time and performance schedules.
3. Provides keyboard accompaniment (e.g. repertoire, exercises, and performances, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring pianist support and instruction.
4. Rehearses with voice students (e.g. coach individual and groups, monitor progress, etc.) for the purpose of monitoring progress and assisting students in overcoming difficulties with rhythm, tempo, and interpretation of music to achieve desired outcomes.
5. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the performances.
1. Completion of at least five (5) years of recognized musical training at a conservatory of music, a college or university; AND
2. At least one (1) year of experience as a professional pianist or piano instructor/dance pianist.
OR
3. Combination of training and experience mentioned above.
NOTE : College Work Study and Student Lab Aide experience with the District will be considered/applied as qualifying experience per an agreement made between the District and SEIU . This agreement will allow the District students to take advantage of employment opportunities. March 2024
“Limited Hours” appointees earn limited benefits (Sick pay only). New employees hired on or after October 1, 2013 will contribute 2% of salary to the San Francisco Retiree Health Care Trust ( RHCTF ).
