Job Definition

Under direct supervision, the Nutrition Services I - Server performs food serving, cooking, kitchen cleaning duties, maintains meal counts and deposits, and does related work as required. Non-routine phases of the work are referred to the Nutrition Services II - Technician, manager or supervisor for advice. Decisions and determinations are based on clearly defined procedures or instructions or on well-defined rules and regulations. Responsibility for getting along with others includes regular contact with students, school staff and the public. The Nutrition Services I - Server works under the supervision of the Nutrition Services Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions
  • Performs routine food preparation duties.
  • Serves food.
  • May need to process free and reduced applications.
  • Performs cleaning and dish washing and other general duties in a kitchen or serving area.
  • May transport food to other school locations.
  • Collects money and operates Meal software.
  • Sells ala carte and snack bar items.
  • May assist with the opening and closing of the kitchen prior to the beginning and after the ending of each school year.
  • Assists in the cleaning and storing of equipment and food supplies.
  • Assists in the process of assuring an adequate supply of food items.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of the assigned operational area.
  • Supervises student helpers.
  • Maintains necessary records.
  • Fulfills other related duties as assigned.
  • Fulfills performance standards identified in the evaluation process as required by the position.
  • Fulfills working conditions and physical effort listed below.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in kitchen and cafeteria environments. The position requires prolonged standing, repetitive motion, bending, reaching, and lifting or carrying supplies and equipment consistent with assigned duties. The employee may be exposed to hot surfaces, sharp tools, cleaning chemicals, temperature extremes including ovens and freezers, and wet or slippery floors. The work environment can be fast‑paced, particularly during meal service periods. The employee will have regular interaction with students during meal service and may be required to provide supervision support in the cafeteria or common areas, requiring attentiveness in moderate to high noise environments. Work follows assigned meal service schedules and requires adherence to food safety and sanitation standards. The role requires attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to perform tasks efficiently within time constraints. The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Operate equipment found in school kitchens.
  • Supervise student helpers.
  • Read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Accurately transfer, record and convey information, materials, and money as required by the position.
  • Where applicable, learn the basic computer software used.
  • Make bank deposits and process the selling of meals accurately and efficiently.
  • Adhere to the district requirement for a drug‑free workplace.
  • Attend regularly scheduled food service workshops.
  • Possess or obtain an Oregon Food Handler’s Permit or maintain current ServSafe certification.
Education and Experience

Equivalent to a high school education or GED. The position requires the basic ability to read, write, and communicate, the ability to understand simple directions and basic mathematical concepts, and to read simple measuring devices. The position requires minimal on‑the‑job training; no special knowledge is required. The basic job could be learned in one shift or day; procedures are simple and repetitive.

Certification and Licensing

Possess or obtain an Oregon Food Handler’s Permit or maintain current ServSafe certification.

Summary

This position’s pay is annualized to include summer months. This position is currently represented by the Oregon School Employees Association, Chapter No. 6.
