Job description

Summary: Welds metal parts with gas welding equipment as specified by layout, welding diagram, work order or blue prints.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Positions parts in jigs or fixtures on bench or floor, or clamps parts together along layout marks.
  • Selects torch, torch tip, filler rod and flux, according to welding chart specifications or type and thickness of metal.
  • Connects regulator valves and hoses to oxygen and fuel gas cylinders, and welding torch.
  • Turns regulator valves to activate flow of gases, lights torch and adjusts gas mixture and pressure, to obtain desired flame.
  • Holds torch at proper angle to metal and guides along weld joint, applying filler rod to molten area to form weld.
  • Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
  • Repairs broken or cracked metal objects, fills holes, and builds up metal parts.
  • Uses Plasma Cutter if necessary.
  • Preheats work piece with torch.
  • Lays out, positions, and tack welds work pieces.
  • Chips or grinds off excess weld, slag, or spatter.
  • Cleans or degreases parts.
  • Sands or touches up weld with sander and/or grinder.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • One year certificate from college or technical school; or three to six months related experience and /or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Welding Certificate
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Inventory software and Manufacturing software.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to read and use a tape measure and calipers.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to assess own strengths and weaknesses; Pursues training and development opportunities; Strives to continuously build knowledge and skills; Shares expertise with others.

Physical Demands.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear, frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and /or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The work schedule for this classification is full-time. Incumbents must work a full-time (30) hours or more per week schedule.


Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to normal indoor non-air-conditioned temperatures and may be exposed to air-conditioned areas. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate where hearing protection is necessary based on OSHA requirements. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
