Job summary

Pilcher Hamilton Corporation is seeking a Slitter Operator for the 2nd shift to safely set up, operate, and monitor slitting equipment overnight. You will perform quality checks, adjust machines, and document production activity to meet safety, quality, and productivity standards.

This role requires reading work orders and specs, using measuring tools, and communicating any issues during handoffs. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, with prior manufacturing or slitting experience helpful.

Qualifications

  • Ability to use a tape measure, ruler, caliper, micrometer, or other required measuring devices.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to identify quality defects and follow standardized procedures.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Reliable attendance and ability to work the assigned 12-hour overnight schedule, including overtime, weekends, or holidays when required.

Responsibilities

  • Review work orders and setup instructions before each job.
  • Set up knives, spacers, cores, shafts, tension controls, guides, and related components.
  • Load and unload rolls using material-handling equipment and verify material specs.
  • Operate slitters and adjust speed, tension, alignment, and knife position.
  • Inspect finished rolls for width and labeling.
  • Record inspection results, production counts, and material usage.
  • Identify defects or issues and notify supervisor as needed.
  • Package, label, and stage finished material per requirements.
  • Perform routine equipment checks and basic preventive maintenance.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and communicate status during handoffs.
  • Participate in training and continuous-improvement activities.

Position Summary

The Slitter Operator is responsible for safely setting up, operating, and monitoring slitting equipment used to convert rolls of material to required customer specifications. This position performs quality checks, makes machine adjustments, documents production activity, and supports consistent output while meeting safety, quality, and productivity standards during the overnight shift.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Follow all company safety procedures, machine guarding requirements, lockout/tagout practices, and required personal protective equipment standards.
  • Review work orders, production schedules, material specifications, and setup instructions before beginning each job.
  • Set up slitter knives, spacers, cores, shafts, tension controls, guides, and related machine components according to job requirements.
  • Load and unload rolls using approved material-handling equipment and verify the correct material, width, gauge, and quantity.
  • Operate slitting equipment and adjust speed, tension, alignment, and knife position to maintain product quality and efficient production.
  • Inspect finished rolls for width, edge quality, winding, appearance, labeling, and other specified requirements.
  • Use measuring tools accurately and record inspection results, production counts, scrap, downtime, and material usage.
  • Identify defects or equipment issues, make permitted adjustments, and notify the supervisor or maintenance team when additional support is required.
  • Package, label, and stage finished material according to customer and internal requirements.
  • Perform routine equipment checks, basic preventive maintenance, blade changes, and cleaning as assigned.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area using established housekeeping standards.
  • Communicate job status, quality concerns, and equipment conditions during shift handoffs.
  • Participate in training, continuous-improvement activities, and other production duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous manufacturing, machine-operation, converting, or slitting experience preferred.
  • Ability to read work orders, basic drawings, labels, and written instructions.
  • Ability to use a tape measure, ruler, caliper, micrometer, or other required measuring devices.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to identify quality defects and follow standardized procedures.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Reliable attendance and ability to work the assigned 12-hour overnight schedule, including overtime, weekends, or holidays when required.
  • Forklift or overhead-crane experience is preferred; certification may be provided or required.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Frequently stand and walk for extended periods during a 12-hour shift.
  • Regularly bend, reach, push, pull, and use hands to handle tools, controls, and materials.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds; heavier materials must be moved with assistance or approved lifting equipment.
  • Work near moving mechanical equipment in a manufacturing environment with noise, dust, varying temperatures, and sharp tooling.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment, which may include safety glasses, hearing protection, cut-resistant gloves, and safety-toe footwear.
  • Maintain the vision and attention needed to inspect materials, read measurements, and operate equipment safely.
Schedule

Second Shift: 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. The specific workweek and rotation will be assigned by management based on production needs. Regular and punctual attendance is an essential function of this position.
