Job summary

Heim Bearings is seeking a 2nd Shift Setup Operator for centerless grinding to support production in Fairfield, CT. The incumbent will oversee the setup and operation of centerless grinding machines and precision gauging equipment, determine feeds/speeds, select tools, exchange grinding wheels, train new staff, and ensure quality control across the line.

The role requires hands-on expertise, strong problem-solving, and the ability to maintain production records while keeping the work area safe

Responsibilities

• Assist the centerless grinding area while maintaining production and quality levels.
• Periodically check operators for quantity and quality and spot check setups.
• Take complete responsibility for setup and operation of centerless grinding machines and related gauging equipment.
• Recommend optimum feeds and speeds and determine compensation requirements.
• Select the best tools for each operation and solve grinding problems that arise in manufacturing.
• Change, select and dress grinding wheels when required.
• Train new employees in the centerless grinding area and oversee gauges such as micrometers, verniers, indicators, shadow gauges and block gauges.
• Report all maintenance needs to the supervisors in a timely manner.
• Maintain accurate production records and assist operators as needed.
• Keep the work area clean and safe and perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Under the direction of the supervisor, this person must assist the centerless grinding area, maintaining both proper production and quality levels by periodically checking operators for quantity and quality and spot checking the setups. The incumbent will have complete responsibility for all aspects of the setup and operation of the centerless grinding machines and related precision gauging equipment including recommending the optimum feeds and speeds, determining compensation requirements, selecting the best tools for any particular operation and solving unusual grinding problems that occur in manufacturing. When required, this individual will also change, select and dress grinding wheels. Using all machines and operators, this person will determine the best work assignments in order to maintain quality and the flow of work. This individual must be able to train new employees in the centerless grinding area and must be able to use, check and direct the use of gauges such as micrometers, verniers, indicators, shadow gauges and jo blocks.

This incumbent must also report all maintenance requirements to the supervisors on a timely basis. This person is also responsible for maintain good production records, assisting operators when required and the segregation, identification and transportation of any material within the grinding area. Other responsibilities include keeping the work area clean and safe, filling in on any job in the department has required and performing any other reasonable duties as assigned by the supervisor.
