Job summary

Great Dane is seeking a Production Supervisor to direct trailer production activities across the Axle Department, Combo Start Line, and Sidewall line. The role ensures adherence to engineering drawings and production schedules; 2nd shift begins at 4:00pm.

Responsibilities include leading teams, planning staffing, addressing defects, and maintaining safety and 5S standards. Collaboration with engineering and maintenance is essential to keep line performance optimal.

Qualifications

  • Education and experience in team leadership and manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to read blueprints and interpret specifications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic computer skills.
  • Strong safety focus and compliance with 5S and lean practices.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and manage trailer production activities to meet schedule and drawings.
  • Supervise staffing plans, rework/defects/scrap, and 5S in area.
  • Conduct safety meetings and ensure compliance with guidelines.
  • Review Sales Order and BOM for discrepancies before start.
  • Coordinate with Supervisors and maintenance to resolve issues.

Job description

THE ROLE

The Position: The Production Supervisor’s primary function is to direct and manage the trailer production activities of their area (i.e., Axle Department, Combo Start Line, Sidewall line). The supervisor ensures the area meets the production schedule and that the trailers produced are consistent with the Engineering drawings in the drawing package. 2nd Shift Begins at 4:00pm.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure individual and employee compliance with all safety rules and requirements.
  • Manage and direct the activities of employees to ensure that the production, quality, and safety requirements are consistently met, including staffing plan for the week based on production volume, preparation for the next shift, management of rework/defects/scrap, implementation of Lean Manufacturing activities, safety observations, review of standard work with the ME department, training matrix updates, and maintaining a clean and organized area using 5S principles.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws; this includes interviewing, training, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; grievance resolution; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Attend weekly safety meetings and communicate the topics discussed to employees in the group, ensuring compliance with safety guidelines and discipline employees when necessary.
  • Attend weekly “Review Meetings” to compare Sales Order information and the Bill of Materials, identify discrepancies, and obtain resolution before starting the job on the production floor.
  • Coordinate with other Supervisors and the Superintendent to resolve any issues that could prevent the production schedule from being met.
  • Work with the Engineering Department to resolve issues that arise during the build process that could result in a Quality, Safety, or performance issue with the product being produced.
  • Communicate with the Production Manager and the ME/Maintenance Manager to ensure tooling, quality, and safety concerns are addressed while maintaining the production schedule.
  • Manage direct reports’ timecards, including in/out punches, approvals, and vacation submissions.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School or GED required.
  • Experience: Team Leader experience; Graduate of Team Leader Academy or college degree; Utilizes Microsoft Office Products; Scope of responsibilities (e.g., number of direct reports, level of difficulty).
  • Knowledge and skill in all processes the supervisor is responsible for, including production techniques and procedures, safety rules and regulations, inspection criteria and methods, and plant-wide initiatives.
  • Ability to effectively instruct, direct, supervise, and lead individuals and teams.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and other customer specifications.
  • Proficiency in computer use, basic database, spreadsheet, word‑processing, and email programs.
  • Must be able to perform the physical requirements listed in the Physical/Mental Requirements section.
  • Aptitude to learn and retain new information.
  • Ability to organize and manage tasks effectively.
  • Must be a self‑directed individual with initiative.
  • Certification in Emergency First Aid, CPR and Automatic External Defibrillator required and will be provided after hire.
  • Other certifications required to lead and perform the job (e.g., welding or paint certification).
  • Ability to speak, read, and write effectively in English.
  • Travel: None.
Physical/Mental Requirements
  • Physical demands: Ability to stand and move on concrete for 8‑12 hours a day; ability to sit, speak, hear, see, walk, bend, reach, grasp, stoop, kneel, twist, crawl, carry, climb, work overhead, push, and pull; ability to do heavy lifting up to 50 pounds on occasion; ability to maneuver large parts and assemblies up to 50 pounds by pushing, pulling, and flipping them into place.
  • Work environment: Employees must dress according to company policy and wear mandated personal protective equipment (eye, head, hearing, hand, and foot protection) due to potential scrapes, punctures, cuts, metal shavings, radiation burns, pinch points, respiratory hazards, heavy falling objects, and high noise level.
