Job summary

Salm Partners, LLC is seeking a capable Shift Manager to oversee production operations and sanitation on the assigned shift. You will monitor performance metrics, drive continuous improvement, mentor staff, and ensure compliance with GMP, SQF, and USDA requirements.

The role requires supervising facilitators, coordinating SOPs, managing staffing, and ensuring safety and quality across blending, packaging, and related areas. A strong background in food manufacturing and leadership is essential.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Develop or revise SOPs and work instructions; ensure procedural compliance.

• Review production and maintenance reports; resolve issues to minimize costs.
• Oversee supply usage and finished goods inventory.

Position Overview

Oversees all operations and sanitation-related activities for the assigned shift. Monitors and tracks production performance and key performance metric; leads process improvements throughout the manufacturing operation, being a driver for a culture of continuous improvement, cost savings and efficiency. Provides process expertise, mentoring and direction to support manufacturing goals and objectives. Ensures shift compliance with all safety, food safety, quality, SQF, GMP and USDA requirements.

Responsibilities

• Oversee production operations across blending, stuffing, packaging, sleeving, vat washing and palletizing areas to ensure an efficient production process.
• Supervise Facilitators; provide guidance and direction in managing their shift performance and personnel.
• Coordinate continuous improvement efforts; evaluate operations processes and methods and provide the Operations team with recommendations for improved process and method approaches.
• Collaboratively with other Shift Managers, develop or revise Standard Operating Procedures and Standardized Work Instructions, and ensure compliance to procedures.
• Help identify and eliminate root causes and diminish non-conformance occurrences in the manufacturing processes.
• Ensure routine, standard communications of the daily production schedule and other pertinent information in pre-shift meetings.
• Oversee the daily and weekly staffing needs based on the production schedule to ensure optimal staffing levels, and review temporary staffing utilization.
• Review daily shift production and operating reports; resolve production, operations and maintenance issues in a timely manner to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
• Oversee and address production needs, changes, and schedules.
• Monitor and track downtime.
• Compile weekly production metrics reports, monitoring yield, waste, #2, inedible, and OEE for the shift; present operational results weekly.
• Oversee production supply usage, monitoring incoming and outgoing supplies and finished goods.
• Identify training and development needs of personnel assigned to the shift and ensure training is provided in a timely manner.
• Oversee the performance management process, ensuring performance reviews and disciplinary actions are completed appropriately and in a timely manner.
• Oversee the sanitation and Master Sanitation activities on the shift.
• Assist with maintaining SQF compliance.
• Ensure compliance with all established GMP, USDA-FSIS and Quality Assurance requirements.
• Oversee the completion of Accident and Near Miss incident investigations; ensure resolution of all safety issues and concerns from a corrective actions and preventive measures standpoint.
• Provide backup assistance to the Facilitators in the event of absences as needed.
• Backup Shift Manager will provide backup in case of an absence.
• Promote and ensure compliance with all established safety policies and procedures.
• Foster and support a positive, open and inclusive work environment.
• Support and promote the Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement initiatives of the company.
• Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
• Directly supervises production Supervisors; carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training partners; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining partners; addressing complaints and resolving personnel problems.

Education

A Bachelors degree in Business, Operations Management or related field is normally required; or if non-degreed, a minimum of ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

Prior experience in a USDA-regulated food manufacturing environment is required, preferably with ready-to-eat processed meats.

Communication Skills

Must possess excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as operational parameters, safety rules, equipment operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, and the ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Must also be able to speak effectively before groups of partners of the organization.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess strong computer proficiency Word, Excel, Outlook, and the Internet. Previous experience with MAS 500 or related integrated manufacturing software is required.

Mathematical Skills

Must possess the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, and percentages, and the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

Reasoning Ability

Must have the ability to solve problems by applying root cause problem solving methods, and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, and the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Training or experience applying Root Cause Problem Solving methodologies is preferred.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the partner is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk and hear. The partner is frequently required to stand and walk. The partner must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include near vision, color vision and depth perception.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a partner encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the office work environment is low, and in the production work environment is usually loud. There is a wide variation of temperatures, ranging from 35° F to 100° F in the various production work areas. The production environment is wet and slippery most times. Partners are required to wear frocks, hairnets, slip-resistant footwear and hearing protection at all times on the production floor. Gloves, goggles, rain suits and boots may be required at different times in the course of the work being performed.
