Must-Have Requirements
- 5+ years of CNC machining experience in a precision machine shop
- Proficient with both CNC lathes and CNC mills
- Strong CNC setup experience, including tooling, workholding, offsets, and program verification
- Proficient making program edits and adjustments at Fanuc controls
- Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, GD&T, and setup documentation
- Strong understanding of precision measurement and tight-tolerance machining
- Ability to troubleshoot machining, tooling, programming, and quality issues
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Ability to delegate work and make production decisions with limited supervision
- Reliable attendance and strong work ethic
Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Lead Setup Machinist to oversee 2nd shift machining operations in a precision manufacturing environment. This position requires a highly skilled machinist who is proficient in both CNC lathes and mills and can serve as a technical resource for the machining team. The Lead Setup Machinist will handle complex setups, make Fanuc program edits, troubleshoot production issues, delegate work, and make day-to-day decisions with limited management support.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Set up and operate both CNC lathes and CNC mills
- Select and install appropriate tooling, inserts, fixtures, workholding, and cutting tools
- Load, verify, and edit CNC programs using Fanuc controls
- Make program adjustments, offsets, and corrections to maintain quality and production requirements
- Read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, setup sheets, work instructions, and job documentation
- Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using micrometers, calipers, indicators, gauges, and other precision measuring equipment
- Troubleshoot machining, tooling, programming, and equipment issues
- Identify problems affecting quality, productivity, or machine uptime and determine appropriate solutions
- Help prioritize jobs and delegate work to machinists and operators based on production needs
- Provide technical guidance and support to less-experienced machinists
- Monitor production progress and help keep jobs on schedule
- Make decisions regarding setups, tooling, machining methods, and production priorities with limited supervision
- Communicate production issues, quality concerns, and job status to management
- Assist with training and development of machining personnel
- Maintain accurate production and inspection documentation
- Ensure proper quality and safety procedures are followed throughout the shift
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe machining environment
Additional Qualifications
- Strong understanding of feeds, speeds, tooling, workholding, and machining processes
- Experience machining complex, close-tolerance components
- Experience with low-volume, high-mix precision machining preferred
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability
- Ability to read and modify existing CNC programs without extensive supervision
- Experience working with steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and other industrial materials
- Strong understanding of shop math and precision measurement
- Previous lead, trainer, senior machinist, or informal leadership experience preferred
- Ability to remain productive and make sound decisions in a fast-paced production environment
