Job summary

The Shelly Company, a CRH company, is seeking a 2nd Shift General Laborer at our Ohio facility. This full-time role supports plant operations, labor tasks and basic equipment use in a fast-paced construction environment.

You will assist the foreperson, operate heavy equipment such as a Frontend Loader and a skid steer, perform general labor, and help with maintenance. OSHA & MSHA safety rules apply; long hours, night/weekend work may be required.

Qualifications

  • Education and experience: high school diploma or GED, or 1–3 months related experience.
  • Basic math skills and ability to read and interpret safety rules and manuals.
  • Ability to follow directions and work effectively in a team.
  • Willingness to travel and work nights/weekends when required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the plant foreperson with daily operations and upkeep of the plant.
  • Operate heavy equipment including Frontend Loader and skid steer loader.
  • Perform general labor, shoveling and maintenance as needed.
  • May perform welding and fabrication duties as required.
  • Identify safety hazards and respond appropriately.
  • Follow directions and work with the crew.
  • Understand OSHA & MSHA regulations.

Position Overview

Individual shall perform various duties around the facility which include general laboring, equipment operation and plant maintenance.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
  • Assist the plant foreperson with the daily operations and upkeep of the plant.
  • Ability to maintain and safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment, including but not limited to; Frontend Loader and skid steer loader.
  • Other miscellaneous duties include but not limited to; general labor, shoveling, performing necessary equipment maintenance, assisting foreperson and/or crew members as needed.
  • May perform welding and fabrication duties as required.
  • Ability to detect safety hazards and equipment malfunctions and respond accordingly.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • General understanding of OSHA & MSHA regulations.
Other Requirements:
  • Employee must join Local 18 IUOE within 30 days of employment.
  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public at all times.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Manual of Safety Practices and Procedures.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situation to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to perform basic mathematical skills.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The employee must regularly lift and/or move more than 105 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to wet, humid condition airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud and may require protective equipment.
