Base pay range

$38.00/yr - $46.11/yr

Duties
  • Serve on a 6000 ton, 3140 cubic yard, 6000 horsepower diesel seagoing hopper dredge.
  • Stand regular watch and ensure proper operation of machinery and service facilities during shift (e.g., engines, generators, pumps).
  • Inspect operating machinery regularly to ensure proper functioning by observing gauges and indicators.
  • Maintain operations log.
  • Operate all equipment in engine room as required.
  • Supervise and review Junior Engineers, Oilers, and others; instruct on safe work methods and proper equipment use.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer with repairs to engines, auxiliaries, facilities, and equipment.
  • Take charge of the Engine Department during dock tie-up periods when assigned.
Requirements
Conditions of Employment
  • Background check and suitability determination.
  • Willingness to serve a one-year probationary period.
  • Pre-employment physical and annual physicals thereafter.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Travel up to 5% required.
  • Pass pre-employment and random drug and alcohol tests.
Qualifications

US Citizens only. Experience includes paid, unpaid, and volunteer work. Relevant experience must be clearly described in your resume. Education transcripts are required if qualifying through education.

Basic Requirements
  • Ability to perform the work of a 3rd Assistant Engineer (Diesel) without more than normal supervision.
  • Ability to perform complex repairs and read gauges during continuous operations.
Licensing/Certification (Selective Placement Factors)
  • Valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential as Third or Second Assistant Engineer.
  • Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping as an Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch.
  • Valid TWIC card.
Physical Effort

Light to moderate effort required for standing watch and repairs.

Working Conditions

Work in engine room with loud noises and high temperatures; exposure to hazards such as cuts, bruises, burns, and drowning.

Additional Information
  • Use of DHA direct hire authority.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification for Selective Service.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship required.
  • One year trial/probationary period may be required.

  • The dredge operates 70 days/year; other times for maintenance or shipyard work.
  • Work schedule: 15 days on, 13 days off.
