Job Description
Reports To: Principal
Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Management of Instructional Time: Arrange materials, supplies, and equipment at the start of each lesson; begin classes promptly; keep students on task.
- Management of Student Behavior: Establish rules and procedures for participation, talk, movement, and transitions; monitor behavior; address inappropriate behavior consistently and respectfully.
- Instructional Presentation: Review prior material, introduce objectives, deliver fluent and precise instruction, use examples and demonstrations, assign tasks, ask questions appropriately, maintain pace, make smooth transitions, summarize key points.
- Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance: Set clear work standards, circulate to check performance, use oral and written checks, ask questions clearly.
- Instructional Feedback: Provide corrective and encouraging feedback during class, prompt feedback on out-of-class work, probe incorrect responses.
- Facilitating Instruction: Develop instructional plans aligning with curriculum goals, use diagnostic data to adjust objectives, maintain accurate records, utilize available resources.
- Interacting within Educational Environment: Treat all students fairly, interact with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
- Performing Non‑Instructional Duties: Carry out duties as assigned, adhere to laws and policies, pursue professional development.

Minimum Training and Experience
Degree in education or a related field that qualifies for licensure by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
Minimum Qualifications or Standards
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs; exert negligible force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects; consistent with Light Work.
- Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge characteristics of data, people or things.
- Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information; receive instructions from superiors.
- Language Ability: Requires the ability to read correspondence, reports, handbooks; prepare reports, forms, instructional materials using prescribed format.
- Intelligence: Requires applying principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Verbal Aptitude: Requires recording and delivering information, explaining procedures, following oral and written instructions.
- Numerical Aptitude: Requires utilizing mathematical formulas; addition, subtraction, multiplication, division; decimals, percentages; descriptive and inferential statistics.
- Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires inspecting items for proper length, width and shape.
- Motor Coordination: Requires coordinating hands and eyes rapidly and accurately on office equipment.
- Manual Dexterity: Requires handling items such as office equipment and hand tools; minimal coordination.
- Color Discrimination: Requires differentiating colors and shades.
- Interpersonal Temperament: Requires dealing with people beyond instructions, adapting under stress.
- Physical Communication: Requires talking and hearing; ability to communicate via telephone.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Constantly monitor safety and well‑being of students, especially in inclusive activities.
- Motivate students.
- Maintain clean and orderly environment; perform general clerical duties.
- Maintain order and discipline in classroom; operate office machines.
- Maintain files and records; follow written and oral instructions.
- Establish effective working relationships as required by assignments.
