Education Assistant - Special Education I (0.75 FTE / 6 hours per day; Probationary)

Assignment: Walker Elementary

Reports To: Principal

Job Summary

Assists special education teaching staff by performing instructional tasks with students in small groups and one‑on‑one settings, record‑keeping and supervision. Performs duties with close supervision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Follows and maintains knowledge of applicable District policies and procedures.
  2. Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments (reading, math, and writing groups).
  3. Works directly with students with a variety of special needs.
  4. Assists students with tracking assignments and managing behaviors.
  5. Tests and records students' abilities in math, writing, and reading and progress as directed by licensed staff member.
  6. May be asked to clean up spills and wipe down tables in cafeteria when assigned supervision duty.
  7. Monitors and assists students as needed in the classroom, at recess, at lunch, and at other places students gather.
  8. Supervises large groups of children at recess and lunch ensuring safety and security at all times.
  9. Assists with physical management of students including lifting, moving, positioning, feeding, and toileting or diapering and restraint when necessary under direction of the licensed staff member.
  10. Assists with physical needs of students (carrying books, clearing access ways, etc.).
  11. Escorts and supervises assigned students in various activities (music, PE, recess, library, etc.).
  12. Implements and tracks Individual Education Plan (IEP) data. May assist with IEP meeting preparation.
  13. Models appropriate behavior in various social settings.
  14. Presents subject matter to students, utilizing variety of methods and techniques such as lecture, discussion and supervised role playing.
  15. Confers with teaching staff on progress of students.
  16. Assists staff with record keeping, copying, filing, grading assignments and taking attendance.
  17. Transports recess equipment outside, reports unsafe equipment and secures equipment when not in use.
  18. Assists licensed staff member in developing educational materials (copying, typing, laminating, etc.).
  19. Implements daily activities and instruction for students under the direction of and planned by the licensed staff member.
  20. Follows prescribed daily schedule as outlined by the building administrator.
  21. Assists licensed staff member in set‑up and maintenance of the classroom, materials and supplies.
  22. Assists licensed staff member in scheduling appropriate meetings and completion of paperwork.
  23. Assists licensed staff member, when directed, in communicating with parents/guardians.
  24. May administer medications or medical intervention within the scope of District policy(ies) and state and federal law, under the direction of licensed staff or building administrator.
  25. Participates effectively at regular team meetings with licensed staff member and other support staff using appropriate social skills.
  26. Assists in maintaining a safe environment for students at all times.
  27. Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to supervisor.
  28. Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, administrators and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
  29. Appropriately maintains and secures confidential records and inquiries.
  30. Professionally represents the school and the District in interactions with parents, community, staff, and students.
  31. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
  32. Attends work regularly and is punctual.
Marginal Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Assists office staff and licensed staff members as necessary including answering telephones, routing telephone calls or messages to appropriate staff and operating general office machinery including photocopy machine, computer and fax machine.
  2. Performs minor first aid in compliance with District policy(ies) and completes required paperwork in a timely fashion.
  3. Assists on school field trips as requested.
  4. Files documents and records according to predetermined classifications, maintaining alphabetical index, and cross‑reference files.
  5. Attends and participates in planning and in‑service trainings.
  6. Attends staff meetings.
Supervisory Responsibilities

All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

Qualifications
  • Education and/or Experience: Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two‑year college or technical school or one to two years' related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must meet current requirements. Prior successful experience working in a school setting or with special needs students strongly preferred.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others' ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrated ability to successfully work with special needs students.
  • Language Skills: Ability to communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English. Ability to effectively present information and respond effectively to questions in one‑on‑one, small group situations to students and other school staff. Ability to verbally respond to common inquiries from students. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in a variety of situations.
  • Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software, e‑mail, internet software, spreadsheets, and word processing software. Student information software strongly preferred.
  • Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents and members of the community. Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as determined by the District including meeting current certification requirements and a valid Oregon Driver's License. Ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate, but occasionally high depending upon student population and activities. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions and outdoor weather conditions. Employee may be exposed to blood borne pathogens.
