CHILD NUTRITION OPERATOR

Pool postings are utilized to gather applications for potential job openings that may become vacant in a department throughout the year.

Reports To: Cafeteria Manager

Supervises: N/A

Job Summary

To prepare and serve nutritious meals for school children by using quantitative recipes and sanitary work habits. To maintain cleanliness of the cafeteria/kitchen area and any other related work designated by the school cafeteria manager.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in the preparation of meal portions which involves cooking and baking using various utensils and appliances; may perform specialized duties such as baking, frying, broiling, etc. or preparing meats, vegetables, salads, desserts, sandwiches, etc. Demonstrate the ability to measure and mix ingredients according to recipes, and prepare, season, and cook food appropriately. Effectively plan and coordinate work schedules so that foods will be ready at required times.
  • Always ensure that all foods meet existing standards for quality, freshness, taste, and appearance and that required sanitary levels are maintained throughout the food preparation process.
  • Demonstrate the ability to set up the steam table and serving line; obtain and place dishes, silverware, hot and cold foods, baked goods, beverages, desserts, and condiments. Serve students and staff from the cafeteria counter; keep dispensing and related equipment full and operating for service. Effectively maintain prepared and partially prepared foods in optimum condition until served. Devise best methods of presentation.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen and cafeteria areas; wash dishes; clear counters, sweep and mop floors; clean freezers, coolers, and storage areas; clean kitchen appliances; clean and maintain the garbage collection area. Ensure that all cooking equipment and utensils are inspected and maintained for proper operation.
  • Operate and/or utilize various appliances and equipment such as ovens, stoves, mixers, dishwasher, deep fryer, etc. Effectively notify supervisor of problems and needs concerning equipment and food supplies, assist in food orders and inventories.
  • Maintain files of recipes and menu items; estimate food items needed; inspect, weigh, measure, wash, and otherwise prepare food items for cooking and serving.
  • Interact with immediate supervisor, students, parents, teachers, school staff, and administration.
  • Perform duties in compliance with safety and health standards. Store stock in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or required.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required

High school diploma or GED preferred. Demonstrated aptitude for successful performance.

Terms of Employment

One hundred eighty-five (185) days per year. Hours to be determined by the Cafeteria Manager and/or the Director of Child Nutrition Services.

Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and simple correspondence. Ability to present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, other employees, and/or students.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract two‑digit numbers, and to multiply and divide with tens and hundreds. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply simple understanding to carry out detailed but basic written and/or oral instructions.

Other Skills and Abilities

Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp utensils.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as degreasers and disinfectants. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
