Job Description

Deliver Occupational Therapy services in the educational setting on behalf of students who are limited by physical impairments or illness, psychosocial dysfunction, developmental or learning disabilities, socioeconomic and cultural differences to achieve optimum functional performance, maximize independence, prevent disability, and maintain health; includes evaluation, treatment, environmental modification, consultation, training, and program monitoring.

Job Qualifications
  • Accredited college graduate or technical training program for Occupational Therapy
  • Valid AOTCB certification; Arizona Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners license as an OT
  • Valid Arizona driver's license
  • Pediatric or school‑based experience preferred
  • Ability to contribute and participate in assessment, intervention, and documentation
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Ability to work independently and maintain effective relationships with district personnel and other team members
Essential Functions

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Use standardized measures and clinical observation skills for evaluation of students to assist teams in identifying students with potential educational disabilities
  • Write reports describing assessment data
  • Attend regular team and school meetings; maintain documentation including therapy notes, IEP paperwork, evaluation reports, and Medicaid billing
  • Communicate regularly with team members and parents, collaborating to develop and implement effective educational plans
  • Utilize current evidence‑based practice and maintain effective progress monitoring methods
  • Monitor implementation of educational programs to enhance performance or maintain health by health aids or other staff
  • Apply knowledge of disabling conditions on and before birth, and their effects on students with special needs related to educational performance
  • Understand the educational system, federal and state regulations, and ethical/legal responsibilities applying to OT in education
  • Know major theories, treatment procedures, and research relevant to OT for children (age 3‑22) with disabilities
  • Assess functional performance of students with disabilities within the school environment, identifying, comparing, selecting, and administering appropriate evaluations
  • Interpret assessment results and use them to develop therapeutic intervention plans and classroom strategies, including adaptive equipment, assistive technology devices, and external consultation
  • Facilitate transition among agencies, programs, and professionals as service provision changes
  • Engage in consensus decision‑making as part of the IEP process to develop appropriate goals and objectives
  • Plan and implement intervention strategies using a continuum of service delivery approaches in the least restrictive environment
  • Evaluate, modify, and document effectiveness of OT interventions relative to student education programs
  • Provide continuing education to enhance skills, expertise, and professional knowledge; supervise COTAs
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Physical Requirements

Stand frequently; talk or listen; walk and sit regularly; occasionally push or lift up to 50 pounds such as boxes or supplies. Requires close vision to read handwritten or typed material and adjust focus. Must meet demands from multiple people and interact with public and staff.

Working Environment

Noisy to moderate to moderately high during school day; recurring stress periods possible.

Evaluation

Performance evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of support staff members.
