TITLE: HVAC Foreman

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of high school and eight years of experience in the heating and air conditioning trade, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Three years of supervisory experience required and technical school training recommended. Thorough knowledge of heating, ventilation and refrigeration theory. Skilled in the diagnosis and repair of defective systems and controls. One of the three mechanical licenses (H1, H2, and H3) based on state requirements, as directed by the Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors preferred. NATE Chiller Certification and IAQ Certification. Associates degree in HVAC preferred. Proficient in computer skills.

REPORTS TO: Energy/HVAC Supervisor

JOB GOAL: To coordinate and supervise the proper installation, service and maintenance of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Control (HVAC) systems for the benefit of students and staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develops long-term departmental goals, objectives and strategies.

Analyzes HVAC system requirements recommending new systems or modifications.

Reviews plans and specifications for new construction to determine compatibility with existing equipment or acceptability of design.

Researches new equipment or procedures for possible adoption and use.

Serves as technical expert in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning field.

Assists in the inspection of contractor installed HVAC systems to establish adequacy of design and quality of installation.

Develops and provides effective employee training; to include proper use of tools, work practices, environmental and safety compliance, and technological advances.

Recommends persons to be hired, disciplined, discharged or promoted.

Supervises interview panel for new HVAC candidates.

Supervises the installation, maintenance, alteration and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units and associated air handling, chilled water/hot water/steam distribution, and environmental control systems.

Prioritizes, plans, assigns, coordinates and directs the work of HVAC mechanics and crew leaders.

Estimates and orders needed equipment and supplies.

Conducts quality check on work in progress or upon completion to assure acceptability.

Oversees repairs to electric control circuits, replacement of faulty thermostats, wiring, and control systems.

Develops and implements predictive and preventive maintenance programs.

Troubleshoots complex mechanical or control problems to properly diagnose malfunctions.

Supervises the work of personnel assisting with various phases of the work and coordinates work with other trades as necessary.

Keeps record of equipment, supply and truck inventory.

Performs administrative duties as assigned.

Reads blueprints and diagrams.

Possesses knowledge of mechanical code rules and regulations.

Manages EPA Refrigeration Recovery program.

Attends and successfully completes all training activities as required to improve ability and knowledge in performance of work duties.

Performs all other duties and accepts all responsibilities as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The employee must be able to demonstrate the following physical demands to safely and productively perform the essential functions of the HVAC position.

The job requires constant standing/walking on even/uneven terrain, material handling/tool use and work from knee to chest level; frequent work from chest to overhead, and below knee level and climbing; and occasional sitting/driving and crawling.

The employee must be able to lift/carry up to 25 lbs constantly, 50 lbs frequently and 110 lbs occasionally and rarely up to 160 lbs.

The employee must be able to exert push/pull forces up to 110 lbs/force.

The employee must be able to work in confined spaces requiring entry to 24” x 24” crawl spaces occasionally.

The employee must be able to tolerate the above job demands on a regular schedule and as assigned.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Background check with local and state law enforcement agencies required.

Must possess a valid NC Driver’s License.

Must possess ability to obtain a CDL when requested.
