Teaching Associate (TA) – Department of Mathematics

College of Science and Mathematics

Position Overview

Teaching Associates are graduate students who provide classroom instruction in the Department of Mathematics. Eligibility is determined by TA eligibility, department eligibility, and adequate funding.

  • The department seeks TA applicants for sections of mathematics support classes.
  • TAs will teach sections of MATH 3L, MATH 10AL, MATH 11L, and/or MATH 45L in the upcoming semester and may have opportunities to teach other beginning courses.
  • The department reserves the right to select the most qualified candidate for each position and assign TAs to courses appropriate for the program and curriculum in any given semester.
Appointment Dates
  • Fall 2026: August 19, 2026 – December 22, 2026
  • Spring 2027: January 15, 2027 – May 26, 2027
Hours and Units per Week

Students may work up to 20 hours per week. 1 unit equals 2.66 hours per week.

  • Labs: 1.3 – 5.2 units (dependent on courses and sections assigned)
  • Lectures: 3 – 6 units (dependent on courses and sections assigned)
  • No more than 7.5 units
Job Duties
  • Teach beginning mathematics support courses as instructor of record.
  • Maintain office hours.
  • Conduct classroom and/or laboratory/activity sessions.
  • Administer examinations.
  • Assess student performance and determine course grades.
  • Assist students outside of class or laboratory hours.
  • Attend faculty meetings for briefing, coordination, and discussion of course content.
  • Perform other assignments supportive of university instruction.
  • Attend TA orientation at the beginning of the semester.
  • Evaluate student work, record, and post grades.
  • Manage Canvas.
Qualifications
  1. Admission to the Graduate Program in Mathematics, in good academic standing.
  2. Enrollment in at least 6 units for the semester or in two courses toward the degree.
  3. Demonstrated satisfactory progress toward the degree.
  4. Ability to relate well with faculty, staff, and students and a potential to learn instruction and evaluation.
  5. Commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds and developing a supportive learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Solid writing and speaking skills.
  • Strong study skills and time‑management skills.
