Position Description: The Department of Linguistics seeks graduate students as Teaching Associate applicants. Teaching Associates typically are responsible for providing classroom instruction. Eligibility is determined by successful TA eligibility, department eligibility and adequate funding.

Job Duties:

  • Teach sections of Japanese 1A as instructor of record.
  • Maintain office hours.
  • Conduct classroom and/or laboratory instruction.
  • Create and grade assignments.
  • Prepare course material.
  • Administer examinations.
  • Assist students outside of class or laboratory hours.
  • Attend faculty meetings for briefing, coordination, and discussion of course content and materials.
  • Perform other assignments supportive of university instruction.

Qualifications:

  • Admission to the Japanese Program in the Department of Linguistics, in good academic standing.
  • Enrollment in at least 6‑units for the semester or in two courses toward the degree.
  • Demonstrated satisfactory progress toward the degree.
  • Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment and willingness to learn instructional skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Evidence of subject‑matter competence.
  • Communication skills appropriate to the instructional setting.
  • Ability and willingness to work with computers including common word‑processing software and computer‑based language teaching technology.

Hours/Units per week: Students can work up to 20‑hours per week. 1-unit is equivalent to 2.66 hours per week (40hrs / 15‑unit). Typical ranges: 1.3‑5.2 child‑units for labs; 3‑6 units for lectures; a maximum of 7.5 units overall.

Salary and benefits: Salary is based on weighted teaching units. Base salary can be found in the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code = 2354).
