The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority-Tampa International Airport is seeking a Traffic Specialist to manage airport-wide traffic operations, guide curbside vehicular flow, and enforce parking regulations while ensuring safety and excellent service to passengers and staff. Flexibility to work rotating shifts on a 24/7 schedule is required, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays.

Position may involve emergency call-ins and security duties as part of public safety

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One year verified work experience.
  • Must pass Police background incl. polygraph and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver License.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and controls vehicular traffic on airport curbside drives and taxiways.
  • Provides customer service and curbside assistance to airport users.
  • Enforces parking regulations by issuing citations as needed.
  • Monitors changing traffic conditions and makes real-time decisions to optimize flow.
  • Conducts inspections of traffic areas to identify hazards and ensure safety standards.
  • Assists with traffic control during special events or emergencies and coordinates with other departments.

Job description

Under the general direction of the Traffic Supervisor, the Traffic Specialist is responsible for managing a wide range of traffic-related duties at the airport. This role encompasses directing and controlling vehicular traffic on terminal curbside drives, enforcing parking regulations, and ensuring the safety and security of the Authority property, facilities, staff, and the general public. The Traffic Specialist maintains efficient traffic flow while providing excellent customer service to airport users.

This position requires flexibility to work rotating shifts, including days, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays, to meet the demands of our 24/7 operations.

Requires availability for emergency call-in.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Directsand controls vehicular traffic on airport terminal curbside drives and at checkpoint areas crossing taxiways to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.
  • Providescustomer service and curbside assistance to airport users, offering information and guidance as needed to enhance the passenger experience.
  • Performssecurity duties to protect airport property, facilities, personnel, and the general public, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
  • Enforcesparking regulations by issuing citations as necessary, maintaining order and compliance within the airport's parking facilities.
  • Monitorsand assesses changing traffic conditions, making real-time decisions to optimize traffic flow and safety.
  • Conducts inspections of traffic areas to identify safety hazards and ensure compliance with established standards.
  • Assistswith traffic control during special events or emergencies, collaborating with other departments to ensure effective coordination.
  • Participatesin training and development programs to enhance skills related to traffic management and public safety.
  • Conductsregular inspections of traffic areas to ensure compliance with established safety standards and identify potential hazards.
  • Engagesin community outreach efforts to educate the public about traffic regulations and safety initiatives at the airport.
  • Maintainaccurate records of traffic incidents, citations issued, and other relevant data for reporting and analysis purposes.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations while performing tasks to ensure a safe working environment, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and reporting potential hazards.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required as an essential function of the position.

COMPENSATION - $20.19 per hour

REQUIRED FOR ALL HCAA JOBS
  • In the event of an emergency or disaster that impacts the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority (HCAA), an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department or the HCAA Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Such assignments may be before, during, or after the emergency/disaster.
  • Complies with all HCAA Policies, Standard Procedures, Rules and Regulations, and Operating Directives.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School diploma or valid equivalent.
  • One (1) year verified work experience.
  • Must be able to pass the Police Department background investigation including a polygraph assessment and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver License.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate’s degree in criminal justice, business administration, management, public administration or a related field.
  • Previous experience in traffic control.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledgeof airport traffic rules and regulations to ensure compliance and safety in managing vehicular movement within the airport.
  • Knowledgeof airport security protocols and procedures, enabling effective enforcement of safety measures and regulations.
  • Skillin directing and controlling vehicular traffic to maintain safe and efficient flow on airport terminal curbside drives and taxiways.
  • Abilityto operate a tow truck and other airport vehicles safely and efficiently while performing traffic management duties.
  • Abilityto remain calm and composed under stressful conditions, effectively managing traffic situations and public interactions.
  • Knowledge of the functions, services, procedures, and regulations of the unit to which assigned.
  • Skill in the use of Word, and Outlook.
  • Abilityto engage with the community through outreach efforts, educating the public on traffic regulations and promoting safety initiatives at the airport.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others within and outside the Authority.
  • Ability to handle restricted, sensitive, and confidential information.
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service, serve the public, and represent the Authority with courtesy and professionalism.
