Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, has partnered with the Department of Defense (DOD) to offer a FREE 16-week training opportunity at The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (Danville Community College) in Danville, VA. This is an unpaid opportunity; however, the training and lodging/housing in Danville, VA will be provided and paid for by a grant from the Department of Defense. All housing and utilities for this training are covered by the program.
The 16-week/600 hour training program will cover safety, an introduction to various tools and machinist skills, a validation of basic machinist competencies, and an evaluation of employability skills. This program is designed to be hands-on training, focusing on a candidate's ability to follow verbal and written instruction, programming and operation of lathe and milling machines, tool selection, accomplishing specific tasks in a reasonable time, and performing all activities in a safe manner. Inside (CNC) Machinists operate various machines (manual and/or CNC) such as lathes, mills, vertical machining centers, horizontal boring mills, etc. Inside machinists troubleshoot operations and take appropriate actions to correct. The machinists perform quality inspections, verifying dimensions of work pieces are in accordance with drawing specifications.
HS Diploma or GED. The candidate must be able to understand written instructions, and strong math skills are essential. This is a construction environment involving physical labor and various weather conditions within a shipyard environment. Must be able to train/work on any shift.
Prior mechanical experience such as automotive repair, plant maintenance, machinery installation/repair is a plus. Successful completion of a technical/vocational program in machining, diesel technology, automotive, HVAC, or mechanical.
