Music Teacher Job Description

Job Title: Music Band Teacher.

Credentials: Current Oklahoma Certificate or License with endorsements for appropriate level/subject area.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in education with a major or minor in Music.

Reports to: Building administrators.

Contract: 182 days (+ New Teacher Induction week for teachers new to NPS).

FLSA Classification: Exempt.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Teach skills in music appreciation, harmony, and explorations in music, instrumental music (band, orchestra, instrumental ensemble) and choir (chorus, choir, choral ensemble) to pupils.
  2. Utilize course study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  3. Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter.
  4. Plan a balanced music program and organize daily class time for preparation, rehearsal, and instruction within the allotted time.
  5. Utilize repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, appropriate for all skill levels.
  6. Organize classroom routines to minimize disciplinary problems, handling all but the most serious without administrative involvement.
  7. Create a productive learning environment during practice, rehearsals, and performances.
  8. Evaluate each student’s musical growth and contribution to group performances.
  9. Plan, rehearse, and direct musical programs for school and community events.
  10. Apply knowledge of national, state, and district procedures and limitations on performances.
  11. Select and requisition books, instruments, and instructional aides; maintain inventory.
  12. Communicate with parents and administrators about students’ progress.
  13. Evaluate students’ academic growth fairly using standardized tests and teacher-designed assignments.
  14. Collaborate with professional staff to assess and support students’ health, attitude, and learning issues.
  15. Maintain accurate records and prepare progress reports.
  16. Assist in providing musical programs for school productions, graduations, and civic functions.
  17. Supervise students outside of class during school hours.
  18. Participate in curriculum development and other professional programs.
  19. Establish rapport with students, providing a safe and orderly learning environment.
  20. Maintain a professional and ethical attitude towards all stakeholders.
  21. Demonstrate emotional maturity, initiative, and problem-solving skills; respond constructively to criticism.
  22. Present a professional appearance appropriate to duties.
  23. Apply understanding of multicultural issues.
  24. Contribute to extra-curricular activities as assigned.
  25. Maintain building equipment and supplies, promoting good stewardship.
