Job Summary

Behavioral Health Counselors identify resource inequities, assess school-level needs, and include evidence-based interventions. They provide behavioral health support and foster a safe and successful learning environment for students. They offer counseling services that support academic, personal, social, and career development, including individual and group counseling, and implement programs on decision-making, conflict resolution, self-esteem, and coping strategies. They serve as primary agents for addressing issues impacting students at risk of underachievement and act as school-based resources for child abuse/neglect and crisis intervention. They liaise with community and government agencies and participate in multidisciplinary teams.

Essential Functions

  • Creates an environment with access to behavioral health services;
  • Provides individual and group counseling;
  • Implements evidence-based interventions addressing student concerns;
  • Serves as the primary contact for student transitions related to psychiatric placements;
  • Addresses child abuse/neglect and crisis prevention/intervention;
  • Participates in team interventions and multidisciplinary meetings;
  • Collaborates with families, teachers, and community resources;
  • Develops and maintains resource guides for behavioral health supports;
  • Refers students to outside agencies and follows up;
  • Disseminates critical information on issues like substance abuse and homelessness;
  • Maintains student records and prepares reports;
  • Establishes relationships with community agencies to facilitate services.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in related field;
  • Two years of relevant post-Master's experience;
  • Valid Pennsylvania counseling certification or enrollment verification for certification;

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of counseling principles, child development, and community resources;
  • Ability to provide counseling, work with families, and handle crisis situations effectively.
