About This Posting

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Under the supervision of a professional educator, school nurse, and/or building administrator, provide for educational, personal, and physical needs of students with complex health needs.
  2. Responsible for assessment and intervention of complex health and medical needs including respiratory status, seizure management, G-tube feedings, positioning in a wheelchair, student’s communication, etc.
  3. Coordinate day to day educational program, implementing lesson plans and making decisions about medical, educational, and personal priorities.
  4. Provide emergency care as needed.
  5. Administer medications and carry out nursing procedures under the delegation of the school nurse.
  6. Notify appropriate personnel of emergency situations, including parents, physicians, building personnel, and hospitals.
  7. Assist the student in specialized physical education and other related activities.
  8. Maintain, set-up, clean, sort supplies, equipment for the student's physical environment.
  9. Follow all MMSD District and Health Services Guidelines and emergency protocols for students.
  10. Other duties as assigned when the student is not in attendance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

  1. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse students, staff, and community, orally and in writing.
  2. Ability to make judgments and perform when confronted with emergency situations.
  3. Job requires sitting, standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs), climbing, bending, reaching and kneeling. (Medical exam required for employees transferring from EA job to NA or SEA job).
  4. Good skills as a communicator and team member.
  5. Desire to work with children with complex medical conditions.
  6. Commitment to the model of full integration.
  7. Ability to ride bus to and from school with the student.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a university or college school of nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Official transcripts are required for formal employment.
  2. RN or LPN and CPR/AED certification.
  3. Certification from the Department of Public Instruction as a Special Education Aide.
  4. Prior experience working with children with complex medical conditions.
  5. Prior experience with O2, G-Tubes, diapering, positioning, adaptive wheelchairs.
  6. Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward improving one's own cultural competence.
