Job description

TITLE: Librarian

REPORTS: Principal

JOB GOAL:

To ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information; to empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information; to instill a love of learning in all students and ensure equitable access to information; to collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to design and implement lessons and units of instruction, and assess student learning and instructional effectiveness.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Other duties may be assigned.

  • Participate in the curriculum development process at both the building and district level to ensure that the curricula include the full range of literacy skills (information, media, visual, digital, and technological literacy) necessary to meet content standards and to develop lifelong learners.
  • Collaborate with teachers and students to design and teach engaging inquiry and learning experiences and assessments that incorporate multiple literacies and foster critical thinking.
  • Participate in the implementation of collaboratively planned learning experiences by providing group and individual instruction, assessing student progress, and evaluating activities.
  • Join with teachers and others to plan and implement meaningful experiences that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning.
  • Provide and plan professional development opportunities within the school and district for and with all staff, including other school librarians.
  • In accordance with district policy, develop and maintain a collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and the teaching styles and instructional strategies used within the school community.
  • Cooperate and network with other libraries, librarians, and agencies to provide access to resources outside the school.
  • Model effective strategies for developing multiple literacies.
  • Evaluate, promote, and use existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning, supplement school resources, connect the school with the global learning community, and communicate with students and teachers.
  • Provide guidance in software and hardware evaluation, and develop processes for such evaluation.
  • Understand copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property, and assist users with their understanding and observance of the same.
  • Organize the collection for maximum and effective use using strategic planning for the continuous improvement of the program.
  • Ensure that school library program goals and objectives are aligned with school and district long-range strategic plans.
  • Use effective management principles, including the supervision of personnel, resources, and facilities.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or from a master’s level program in library and information studies accredited or recognized by the appropriate national body of another country) is the appropriate professional degree for school librarians. Must hold a valid Mississippi educator license with an endorsement in media librarian or librarian.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee will work in an environment adhering to school board policy. This position may require work hours that vary as a result of evening activities or emergencies. In addition, job requirements may require work on weekends, holidays, and attendance at meetings.
