Carpenter Job Description

Job Title: Carpenter

Credentials: Valid Oklahoma Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Education: High school diploma or GED; specialized vocational training preferred.

Training or experience required: 5 years of experience; 3 years in the construction industry.

Site: Central Services Center

Reports to: Lead Carpenter

Contract: 260 Days

Salary Schedule: Maintenance 1

FLSA Classification: Non-exempt

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Install, repair, and remodel all building fixtures, doors, walls, windows, roofs, etc. in the district.
  2. Plan and organize work.
  3. Measure jobs and assist Lead Carpenter in purchasing necessary materials at the most economic price.
  4. Perform rough carpentry/framing, hang drywall and tape/rock, hang/install suspended ceiling tiles, hang items for teachers, texture walls in preparation for painting.
  5. Build shelves, cabinets, countertops, etc.
  6. Lay sub flooring, lay flooring, tile, etc.
  7. Assist with roofing, install glass and mirrors, etc.
  8. Install, repair, and build playground equipment.
  9. Build/repair sidewalks, driveways, build forms and perform other concrete work.
  10. Inform supervisor of parts, equipment and other supplies that are necessary to do job.
  11. Work with City building inspectors on a regular basis.
  12. Perform general housekeeping duties at carpenter's shop and maintain shop and tools, including assigned vehicle.
  13. Operate equipment essential for construction such as tractors, trucks, lifts, and scaffolding.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

Employees must possess the basic communication skills to exchange information, give and receive simple instructions and respond to inquiries. Employees may be required to perform routine computations requiring a knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using whole numbers, fractions, decimals and/or percentages. Employees may be required to read and interpret routine written or printed materials such as basic blueprints, charts, diagrams, maps or instruction material. In a workday, the employee must stand/walk 4-5 hours per day. Employee's job requires frequent to continuous squatting/crouching, crawling/kneeling, bending/stooping, climbing and reaching above the shoulders and pushing/pulling. Employee's job requires continuous carrying/lifting of up to 50 pounds and frequent lifting from 50 to 75 pounds lifting cabinets, doors, plywood, sheetrock, equipment, etc. Job requires employee to use both feet for repetitive movements as in operating foot controls; both hands for such repetitive actions requiring simple to firm grasping and/or fine manipulation. Employee must possess manual dexterity/visual ability to operate hand and power tools, and ladders. Must be able to read blueprints, plans, and schematics. Employee must possess hearing to distinguish normal/abnormal sounds. Must be able to communicate with fellow workers and the public. Must be able to climb ladders and steps, crouch, kneel etc. Employee's job requires working on unprotected heights (roofs); use of/close to machinery; working in the outdoors with temperature changes; driving motorized equipment (truck, tractors, fork lift, trenchers); exposure to toxic gas, solvents, electricity, asbestos, powered saws, etc.
