Job description

Job Title: City of Dover Planning Director

The City of Dover is seeking a highly responsible individual to perform routine and complex technical work during building inspections to ensure compliance with the Building Code and other standards. The role requires maintaining a customer-focused, friendly demeanor.

Position Details: Full-time, non-exempt, 40 hours/week. Salary ranges from $29.40 to $42.58 per hour. Open until filled.

Responsibilities:
  • Enforce building codes, including State of New Hampshire Building Codes and Fire Codes, and local ordinances.
  • Guide design professionals and property owners; issue stop work orders, correction notices, and citations.
  • Perform plan reviews to minimize onsite compliance issues.
  • Conduct building inspections, document findings, and maintain records.
  • Oversee alterations for new construction, changes of use, and additions, ensuring conformity with regulations.
  • Conduct life safety inspections.
  • Perform duties as a Plans Examiner or specialized inspector as needed.
  • Assist in resolving customer service issues and research building-related problems.
  • Investigate code compliance complaints and recommend abatement proceedings.
  • Attend preconstruction meetings to explain inspection standards.
  • Ensure safe work procedures are followed.
  • Work effectively within a team environment, demonstrating professionalism and customer focus.
  • Perform technical functions requiring independent judgment in enforcing codes and regulations.
Qualifications:

Thorough knowledge of building and construction codes; ability to read blueprints; effective communication skills. Education preferred in building trades or equivalent experience (minimum high school diploma and 4 years in construction). Valid driver’s license required.
